Vision/Mission Statement:
We believe that physical education is a vital component for the development of a student’s physical, mental and social well-being. It is our mission to provide an equal opportunity to our students, through planned activities, for physical development in the areas of strength, flexibility, coordination, endurance, balance, agility, range of motion, and power. Our diverse program will allow students the opportunity to develop individual skills and introduce new, enjoyable experiences for life-long physical fitness and well-being. We will provide information for knowledge in proper exercise techniques and practices, encourage good nutritional habits, basic muscle anatomy, and elementary cardiovascular physiology.
Objectives of Physical Education:
- The student will be competent in many movement forms.
- The student will understand how and why one moves in a variety of situations and will use this information to enhance his or her own skills.
- The student will achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
- The student will exhibit a physical active lifestyle and will understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge and self-expression.
- The student will demonstrate responsible personal behavior while participating in movement activities.
- The student will demonstrate responsible social development while participating in movement activities and understand the importance of respect for others.
- The student will understand the interrelationship between history, culture, games, sports play and dance.
- A complete change of athletic clothing (gray or black colors only) must be worn. You may wear a plain t-shirt or a sweatshirt (gray or black), KNEE-length shorts or sweatpants (gray or black) , socks and athletic (running or cross training) tennis shoes.
No school clothes should be worn over or under physical education clothes.
- For the safety of the student, proper athletic tennis shoes should be worn to reduce risk of injury.
- Classes may be held outdoors in the fall and spring. Be prepared daily with a jacket, sweatshirt and/or
- No jewelry should be worn during class since it can pose a safety hazard.
NO sodas, energy drinks, or milk products.
***NOTE: Parents please make sure your son/daughter has a good meal between 1-2 hrs. before class
starts; also make sure they have a healthy snack for energy after their workouts.
Class Expectations and Requirements:
- Students must be in the gym prior to the beginning of class.
- Students must wear athletic attire, which consist ofa plain t-shirt, athletic shorts or pants, and appropriate athletic footwear. (See #1 above)
- No gum chewing is allowed in class. No food or drink is allowed inside gym or locker room areas.
- Any injuries or emergencies must be reported to teacher immediately or before end of class.
- HORSEPLAY will not ever be accepted nor tolerated. Abuse or misuse of school property is not acceptable. Obscene language, gestures, harassment, or disrespect will not be tolerated either.
- Students must keep all their belongings within their sight. NO lockers will be assigned.
- Students may NOTloiter "hang-out" in locker room area as per Mt. View College.
- CELL PHONES ARE NOT PERMITTED IN CLASS OR IN THE LOCKER ROOMS. –
The consequence for a student using a cell phone in class without teacher directive is:
(A) Student renders cell phone to teacher (B) cell phone is returned ONLY to parent/guardian.
- The P.E. Dept. @ Mt. View & Garza E.C.H.S. will NOT accept responsibility for lost items.
- All non-suited out students are expected to comply with the classroom rules or will receive further disciplinary action.
- Students are given 10 min. at the end of class so they can freshen up and get dressed to return to classroom. Please remind your son/daughter to practice proper hygiene. Body odor is offensive.
- Students are to report back to coach, in designated area, after getting dressed to assure safety.
Failure to Participate:
- A student well enough to be in school is generally well enough to be dressed and able to participate in class. Any exception to this will be handled on an individual basis.
- A note from a parent is required to excuse a student due to injury or illness. It will be accepted for a maximum of three consecutive days. To be excused longer than three days, a doctor’s note is required.
- A student who (A)chooses not to dress out or (B) chooses not to participate on a particular class day must send to Coach, via e-mail only, a 2 mile make-up due before next class meeting using Runkeeper. [
- Any student with an excused absence from school or an excuse from class participation will be required to make-up the points to get credit for class or classes missed within 3 consecutive days on or before the end of that specific week. (2 mile make-up per class meeting will be the standard for all students absent)
Medical Excuses and Excused Absences:
- Students who have an excused physician-written medical note are the ONLY one’s not required to dress out.
- In the event a student must miss or have class participation modified for 1 to 3 days due to a medical condition, a written note from a parent or legal guardian is required.
Dated notes, written by the parent/guardian, must include:
1. The student’s full name and ID number AND the specific date of excuse
2. A phone number or e-mail where parent/guardian may be reached
3. The specific limitations of the student
4. A signature of parent or legal guardian AND GIVEN TO COACH before beginning of class.
(a.) More than three days on a medical excuse will require a note from a physician, indicating student’s
limitation and length of modification. Understand that any work missed MUST still be made up.
(b.) Students who miss class due to a school-related, family emergency, medical, dental or any valid
excusable activity & have a note are excused from any physical activity for the day of the excuse, but
must make up any work within 3 consecutive class days on or before the end of that specific week.
(See #4 above).
***IF student's injury impairs student to actively participate then student will need to make-up that specific daily assignment or assessment when student is physically able to as soon as possible!
Otherwise we may need to make arrangements to exit the student out of class for another semester.
Attendance:
- All students with excused absences have the opportunity to make up the days missed.
- Students will have 3 consecutive days from their return to run, record & e-mail to Coach 2 miles via Runkeeper before end of week in order to appropriately make-up the assignment(s).
- Parents, please recognize and understand that every time a student fails to suit out, it will equate to a lower grade at the end of the week.
***STUDENTS, when in doubt COMMUNICATE with your P.E. teacher!
Grading Policy: *40% participation *25% assessments *20% written reports *15% Six Weeks Exam
