Healthy eating

When you go to the supermarket, you see shelves and rows of different kinds of food – fresh food, frozen food, food in cans, and food in boxes. But which of these foods does your body need in order to grow strong and healthy?

All the foods are really just different forms of a few basic types of food. These are carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. They contain other things your body needs – fibre, vitamins, minerals, and water.

Carbohydrates are the main source of energy. Foods that are high in carbohydrates include fruit, bread, cereal, rice, pasta, potatoes, peas, beans.

Proteins are the building blocks of life. Proteins help your body to repair and replace cells, build muscles, and control many chemical reactions inside you. Good sources of protein are fish, poultry, milk, eggs, meat.

Fats are also an important part of a healthy diet. They provide your body with chemicals called fatty acids, which your body uses for energy and growth. Meat, eggs, cheese, milk, butter, margarine, and nuts include fats.

Your body needs vitamins. Vitamin A gives you healthy eyes and skin and helps you grow. It is found in a number of foods, including liver, carrots, squash, and spinach.

Several varieties of B vitamins help you body turn food into energy, repair tissues, build muscles, and make red blood cells. Liver, pork, whole-grain cereals, dark leafy vegetables, peanuts are some of the foods containing B vitamins.

Vitamin C gives you healthy teeth, gums, and bones, so eat more oranges, grapefruits, tomatoes, strawberries, spinach.

Vitamin D gives you strong bones. Your skin makes vitamin D directly from the sunlight.

On the whole your body needs about 13 different vitamins.
