MRS. BAILEY’S

SCIENCE PROCEDURES AND POLICIES

PLEASE KEEP THIS HANDOUT IN THE FRONT OF YOUR SCIENCE NOTEBOOK.

Procedures are the way we do things in class. We have procedures so that our class runs smoothly and safely. More class time to do work means less work at home.

Start of class procedures:

1. Enter quietly and sit in your assigned seat. Do not sit on the counters or tables.

2. Bring required materials. Students will not be allowed to return to lockers.

3. There is a regular pencil sharpener at the front of the room. Use before class to sharpen one

pencil. Do not use them to sharpen color pencils. Use a hand-held pencil sharpener during notes or

class discussions.

4. A Daily Science Question will be on the Promethean Board at the beginning of class. Copy and

answer in your science notebook.

5. If an assignment or signed paper is due, place it in the appropriate basket at the front of the room.

Write first and last name on all papers/projects. If I do not receive a paper with your name on it,

you will get a zero for that assignment. Part credit is better than no credit.

End of class procedures:

1. Begin to clean up and put your materials away only after you have been given instructions to do so.

DO NOT GET READY TO LEAVE EARLY.

2. Put all supplies, materials, and equipment back in the appropriate place.

3. Clean up any trash.

4. Remain in your assigned seat until you are dismissed.

5. If you leave something in my class, wait until the next class change to get it.

Getting materials, supplies, and equipment procedures:

1. Materials (stapler, hole punch, etc.) for students are kept on the front table. Materials on

the teacher’s desks are off limits to students.

2. Lab materials must be left alone until instructions are given for their use.

3. Students are not allowed in the preparation room.

Lab safety procedures:

1. Rules in the Safety Contract will be followed at all times.

2. The student will behave responsibly at all times.

3. All instructions (written and verbal) will be followed.

Group work procedures:

1. Use your 6-inch voice during group work.

2. If materials or supplies are needed during group work, someone will be assigned to get the

supplies. Someone will be assigned to return supplies at the end of group work.

Individual work procedures:

1. Students will work without talking during individual work.

Talking and asking questions:

1. Raise your hand to speak. Wait to be called upon.

2. Whenever another person is speaking, you should be listening.

3. Never interrupt someone while they are speaking.

4. Quiet talking is allowed during group work.

5. If you have a question during lab or an activity, raise your hand and let me come to you. It

is not safe to have students moving around the room. Be patient. Try to problem-solve the

question in your group.

Phone calls, announcements, and morning news:

1. Students should not talk during announcements. Also, do not talk when the teacher is on the phone

or talking to an adult at the door.

2. Students are expected to listen quietly to the morning news when it is shown.

Eating and drinking in the classroom:

1. Students are expected to eat/drink in the cafeteria. There should be no open containers of any

kind in class.

2. Food given to you in science must be completely finished before you leave class.

3. Treats given to you in other classes must be completely eaten before you enter this classroom or

saved for later.

Leaving the classroom:

1. Students must have a pass before leaving class.

2. I have band-aids if you need one. Wait for a convenient moment to ask for one.

3. If you want to talk to the guidance counselor, see them during lunch.

4. If you feel sick or faint, ask immediately. This is the one time when it is not rude tointerrupt. If

you feel like you are going to be sick and do not have time to ask, go straight to the restroom.

Make-up work:

1. Make-up work is the responsibility of the student. You must ask for missing work.

2. Handouts are kept on the front table.
