1. Fundamentals of Engineering Examination – Spring 2006
Registration is now open for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. The deadline is March 1, 2006. Registration is completed online at: Information about the FE exam can be found on:
FYI: There have been many questions about the following statement which is printed on the ELSES website: “You must be within 6 months of graduation or a graduate of an EAC or CEAB ABET-equivalent accredited curriculum when you take the exam.” I called Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Services (ELSES)and asked if it is mandatory since many students take the exam a semester before they graduate. ELSES said that it is now a requirement but they do not checkat this point in time. All those who have registered for the Spring exam are still okay even if you are not within 6 months of graduating. Just be aware that within the next year or so ELSES will be asking students for transcripts when registering for the exam. They had told me in the past that it was just a recommendation but it soon will be a requirement when registering.
Also, when registering for the FE exam you need to pick an exam from the drop down menu. Please choose “Fundamental of Engineering Exam”. Do not pick “Civil Principles & Practice of Engineering” or “Environmental Principles & Practice of Engineering”. You will take the Principles & Practice exam after working for 4 years.

3. Spring/Summer/Fall ‘06 graduates
Spring and Summer ‘06 graduates should have both their DEGREE AUDITS and APPLICATION FOR GRADUATION completed.
Fall ’06 graduates should be completing theirs before the end of SPRING semester. All professional electives and distribution courses need to be known before the audit can be submitted.

4. First Annual Railroad night in Northern Lights!!!!
Tuesday February 21st is the career fair and REAC’s first annual Railroad Night. Railroad Night is an opportunity for students and faculty to meet with representatives of the three largest railroad companies in the United States. CSX, BNSF, and UP are sponsoring the event and looking to hire interns, coops, and full time employees from all departments. BNSF is looking to hire 25 students full-time and 30 for internships and CSX and UP have similar needs.
Railroad Night will include a short presentation by each of the companies, a social hour, and dinner at the Northern Lights. This is a great opportunity to make contacts and set up interviews with professionals in companies with total of almost 120,000 employees. If you are looking for a summer job or full time employment starting this summer or next January, this is a great place to look.
Attending Railroad Night is free for REAC members and only $5 for others. If you'd like to attend but haven't paid you $5 membership fee for REAC, you may simply pay to become an official member and sign up for free dinner. You are now able to sign up in the following locations.

6. Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) – Pollution Prevention and Sustainability
The College of Engineering at RowanUniversity is pleased to announce summer research opportunities in Pollution Prevention and Sustainability for undergraduate students. (June 3-July 21, 2006)
They anticipate funding for a maximum of eleven students, with a list of 11 available research projects. The program will last from June 3 through July 21. A competitive stipend of $2,500 along with housing, food and travel will be offered.

8. Job Posting, Internship – School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (ForestEcology)
Four undergraduate student workers needed to assist in research examining the effects of elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide and ozone on forest productivity and carbon cycling. Positions are full-time for the summer of 2006, with the possibility for extension into the school year.
We are looking for 3 individuals that can travel for up to 5 days every other week to Rhinelander, WI (transportation & lodging provided) starting May 1st. At the field site, work will involve using a variety of instruments to take measurements and collect samples. At other times, work will be at MTU and will include analysis of samples in the laboratory and entering and compiling data. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in techniques and instrumentation used in ecology.
We are also looking for 1 individual to work in the lab. Lab work will include analysis of samples and entering and compiling data. High levels of organizational skills are a must for this job. Occasional field work in Rhinelander, WI may be required, but not on a regular basis.
Any student interested in ecology, or with a background in ecology, chemistry, or biology is encouraged to apply. Wages will be dependent upon experience, but students often make more then $10/hr.
