Color Coding the Periodic Table of Elements
Complete the following steps to color coding your Periodic Table of Elements.
You must reference Gateways Lesson 5: The Periodic Table p.43-55.
1. Make the dividing line (staircase-looking zig-zag) between the metals and nonmetals more visible by using a highlighter or colored pencil.
2. Above the dividing line draw a Metals Nonmetals
double sided arrow and label as shown à
3. Color accordingly:
Ø Use the color pink to outline the box for Hydrogen.
Ø Color the metalloids purple.
Ø Lightly color all metals yellow.
Ø Color the nonmetals green. Don’t forget Hydrogen. Note: color the inside of the box green.
4. Label the Periods (P1, E2, R3, I4,O5, D6, S7) to the left of the boxes along the left side of the table.
5. In the blank boxes to the left of the table write the number of energy levels for each Period and label “Number of Energy Levels” on the line.
6. Label the Groups (Group1, Group2, etc…) above each column along the top of the table and underline up in Group to remember Groups run up and down.
7. In the blank boxes along the top of the table write the number of valence electrons for Groups 1-2 and 13-18.
STOP! Before moving on read page 51. Use pages 51-55 to complete steps 8-14.
8. Place a plus (+) sign in the upper left hand corner of all alkali metals and Halogens. The plus sign means they are highly reactive.
9. Using black, draw a horizontal line across each box in the group of alkaline earth metals.
10. Using black, draw a diagonal line across each box of all transition metals (Lanthanides and Actinides are inner transition metals).
11. Using red, add a second diagonal line in the opposite direction through each box in the Lanthanides series. (This will make an X.)
12. Using green, add a second diagonal line in the opposite direction through each box in the Actinides series. (This will make an X.)
13. Draw a “no symbol” boxes of the noble gases.
14. In the bottom right hand corner of the page,
