Chapter 1

How to begin

1.1.System Requirements:

To run this tool, you need the following:

♣A PC with an Intel Pentium Processor (or 100% compatible)

♣32 MB RAM or higher recommended

♣Hard disk (minimum 10MB space to start with)

♣Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT (Windows 2000 recommended)

♣A mouse or compatible pointing device

♣A VGA monitor (15 inch VGA or higher recommended)

♣An Internet connection

♣A suitable browser (Internet Explorer 5.0 recommended)

♣MS Excel 2000

1.2.Installing Lean Assessment Screening Tool:

Connect to the Internet and open the browser window

Go to the web site

Click on the “LEAN”

Save the folder to the required directory in your PC

Access the folder and click on setup.exe

Follow the setup instructions

1.3.Starting Lean Tool:

⊙Click on the Start button on the bottom left of the screen

⊙Select the programs folder

⊙Double click on Lean Assessment Screening Tool

Working with Lean Assessment Screening Tool

The tool begins with the following opening form:

Clicking the “Proceed” button takes you to the Main screen.

2.1. Main Screen

The main screen is shown below:

This screen allows you to go to the section for which you want to perform the assessment. Clicking on the relevant button takes you to that section. The “Exit Assessment” section is used to exit the assessment.

To visit the website on lean practices maintained by the university of Toledo, click on the button on the bottom right of the screen (Figure 2a)

2.2.Assessment Screens

Each section has three assessment screens and a final “Results” screen.

A sample assessment screen is shown below:

Each question on a screen can be answered according to the options provided alongside.

2.2.1.Command Buttons on Assessment screens

“Clear” button

This button is used to clear all the answers that currently have been entered.

“Save” button

This button is used to save the answers and also serves as a check if all questions on a screen have been answered.

“Back” button

Use this button to go to a previous assessment screen.

“Back To Main” button

Clicking this button takes you to the main screen

“Next” button

Use it to move to the next screen. This button does not become active until the “Save” button is clicked and all questions on a particular screen have been answered.

In the event that a question (or in some cases, questions) is not answered and the “Save” button is clicked, a message will appear:

2.3.Results Screen

This screen is used to generate output files that document the answers that have been entered.

The “Find” button: Use this button to calculate lean measures being implemented. The button then becomes invisible.

The screen also has provisions for entering the Company/facility/unit name. Also, a text box is provided for entering the name of the output file. In this text box, a default name is provided, which can be modified by the user.

This tool can be outputted as a text file or an excel spreadsheet, the user can select the type of output from a combo box provided.

Clicking the “Save” button will effect the generation of the output.

The screen also has a “Back” button, the functions of the button are the same as in the assessment screens. Use this button to exit a section and return to the previous screen.

Important Note:

When running this program, do not open any MS Excel Applications until you have exited the program.

However, if you are already using MS Excel before beginning this program, you may continue doing so and also open other MS Excel files.
