Course Objectives

The course intends to help the student:

1) understand the nature of mythic thought as distinct from religious, historical, scientific or

poetic thought,

2) recognize major themes in myths of several cultures,

3) discover mythic themes and concepts in contemporary culture,

4) develop some basic skills in critical analysis.

Procedures for Accomplishing the Objectives

Reading assignments; class discussions and lectures; audio-visual materials; special projects

Student Requirements for Completion of the Course

Thorough and timely reading of all assigned material

Active participation in class discussion

Successful completion of all reading quizzes, announced and unannounced—there will be no

quiz make-ups but the two lowest grades will be dropped Timely submission of project proposals and on time submission of completed projects

Successful completion of midterm and final exams as scheduled

Grading Policy

Quizzes: 35%; midterm: 25%; final: 25%; project and class participation: 15%

Written assignments are expected to be free of errors in basic grammar, spelling, punctuation etc.

All students who have writing difficulties are encouraged to visit the Writing Center as early as possible in the semester.

Attendance Policy

The student is expected to attend all classes and be responsible for all material discussed in class, extra handouts, changes of assignments or schedules etc. One unexcused absence is allowed. A second absence will only be excused with evidence in writing. After two absences the student will be subject to a decrease in his/her grade and may be dropped from the course. In addition, arriving late or leaving early without prior permission may be regarded as an absence.

All cell phones, beepers, pagers will remain turned off during class time.
