Week 2
Mon. March 24th
Objectives: review “used to” and regular verbs in the past tense with “-ed” ending pronunciation / introduce irregular simple past verbs
-Collect emailed HW (sentences using simple past regular verbs with how it is pronounced)
-Review “used to”: students write sentences on the board about habits when they were in high school. 2 sentences in positive and 2 sentences in negative. (15min)
-Group Work: students create a story using the verbs that they included (along with cut out pictures from magazines) on the poster from last week. (Collect for grade) (25min)
-Practice –ed pronunciation: Read through Ex. 7 and 8 sentences with regular past tense verbs. (10min)
-Test what they already know: without looking at p. 95, do p. 96 Ex. 9 and 10 irregular past tense verbs. Then, check on p. 95 chart. (10min)
-HW: write (on notebook paper) the weekly journal about what you did on the weekend.
Tues. March 25th
Objectives: practice pronunciation of –ed endings / learn Group 1 of common irregular past tense verbs and practice in speech
-Collect weekly journal
-Review corrections on the group work story and take turns reading it out loud to practice pronunciation of –ed endings. (15min)
- Irregular simple past verbs: divided into 3 groups of 30 verbs to learn easily.
Group 1: begin/began, blow/blew, bring/brought, buy/bought, catch/caught, come/came, do/did, draw/drew, drink/drank, eat/ate, get/got, give/gave, go/went, grow/grew, hear/heard, know/knew, make/made, meet/met, read/read, run/ran, say/said, see/saw, send/sent, sing/sang, sit/sat, sleep/slept, swim/swam, take/took, throw/threw, write/wrote.
Students make flashcards: present tense on one side and past tense on the other, in two different colors to know which one is which tense. (20min)
-Activity: students must only look at the simple present side of their flashcards. One students starts by showing a verb to the other 2 classmates. Whoever says the correct simple past the fastest must then create a sentence orally using the simple past. Students keep score to see who has the most points. (20min)
-HW: Type a sentence for each verb in Group 1 (total 30) and email it to me.
Wed. March 26th
Objectives: understand corrections in writing with the past tense / learn Group 2 irregular past tense verbs and practice in writing
-Collect emailed HW
-Peer edit the HW and give it a grade. Hand back to the student to review. (15min)
-Group 2: become/became, bite/bit, break/broke, choose/chose, drive/drove, fall/fell, feel/felt, fly/flew, fight/fought, find/found, hold/held, hide/hid, hit/hit, keep/kept, leave/left, lose/lost, mean/meant, pay/paid, put/put, quit/quit, shut/shut, sell/sold, spend/spent, speak/spoke, stand/stood, teach/taught, tell/told, win/won, wear/wore

-Activity: each studentbegins a story with 2 sentences using the 2 verbs from Group 2 that I write on the board (in the present tense for them to write in the past) They must underline those verbs used. Then, they fold back the first sentence so that one can only see the second sentence on the paper. They pass their story to the person on their right for them to continue the story using the next 2 verbs that I write on the board, folding back the story so that only the last sentence written can be viewed by the next person. Not all verbs will be used due to time constraints. Collect stories. (25min)
-HW: study verbs on all the flashcards and be ready for competition tomorrow
Thurs. March 27th
Objectives: review Group 1 and 2 irregular past tense verbs and learn Group 3 / learn how to use negatives and question structure in the past
-Competition: 2 students go to the board to race to see if they can write the irregular simple past verb the fastest when I say the simple present. That student switches with the 3rd student, to race on the board. This continues for most of Group 1 and 2 verbs. (15min)
-Hand back the corrected stories from yesterday and each student reads one aloud to the class, which is the first time they know what the whole story is about. (15min)
-Group 3: beat/beat, bend/bent, build/built, burn/burnt, cost/cost, cut/cut, dream/dreamt, dig/dug, feed/fed, fit/fit, forget/forgot, hurt/hurt, leap/leapt, learn/learnt, lead/led, lend/lent, let/let, light/lit, ring/rang, rise/rose, sink/sank, set/set, shake/shook, shoot/shot, slide/slid, stink/stank, steal/stole, stick/stuck, tear/tore, wake/woke.

-HW: study irregular past tense verbs from flashcards / Read p. 101 interview with Obama and do Ex. 12 and 13 p. 102-103 about the reading, written in complete sentences in the textbook. (Quiz on Lesson 3 on Tuesday next week)
