GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATIONS FOR GRANTS
Origins
The Thomson Charitable Trust is a grant making trust established in 1975 by David Thomson and Michael Thomson. Other family members serve as Trustees, including Stuart Thomson, our current Chairman.Family trustees are supported by members who have a wide range of knowledge and experience in the fields covered by the objectives of the Trust.
The assets of the Trust were derived substantially from shares in the family business of whisky and wine and spirit merchants Peter Thomson (Perth) Ltd. This company was founded in 1909 by Peter Thomson, David’s father and Stuart’sgreat grandfather. The Trust was enlarged significantly when the company was sold in 1982 and further by a bequest from David Thomson when he died in 1993.
Objectives and Grant Making Policy
The objectives of the Trust are to support charitable purposes which include those connected with music, the arts, sport, education and other spheres.
Within this framework, it is the policy of the Trustees to consider applications
- For grants of up to £5,000.
- For services or activities which benefit people in Perthor the wider area of Perth & Kinross.
- With a preference for start-up projects or improvements to the charitable services being offered.
- To exclude applications for employment costs, core funding or other regular annual costs.
Applications for Grants
The Trustees meet at the end of May and November each year to consider applications but decisions may be taken between meetings. Any decision lies solely at the discretion of the Trustees. No explanation will be given and there is no appeal. A grant must be expended for the stated objective and any unused balance must be returned. The applicant must provide any information requested.
Applications from Charities and Organisations
Applications should be made using
GRANT APPLICATION FORM 1: FOR CHARITIES AND ORGANISATIONS.
Some funding for the project should be provided from the organisation’s own resources and from fundraising efforts.
A copy of the most recent Annual Report and Accounts should be provided and the Summary Financial Statement section of the Application Form should be completed.
Applications from Individuals
Grant Applications will be considered from young people residing in Perth & Kinross to take part in voluntary work overseas or other youth group visits overseas provided it is organised by a registered charity or similar body with experience in managing such work. Applications should be made using GRANT APPLICATION FORM 2: FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
In special circumstances, other applications from individuals will be considered. There is no prescribed application form and all relevant details should be submitted on one page of A4 with a minimum of accompanying documents.
