Local Social, Political, and Economic Influences Assignment
CLASSROOM AND ONLINE
- Prepare a presentation on your analysis of a community college’s response to local social, political, or economic influence. The Local Social, Political, and Economic Influences Presentation is due in Week Six.
As a Learning Team, select one of the following social, political, or economic concerns that could influence a community college, or another concern of your choosing:
- A manufacturing plant shuts down causing 2,000 workers in the local community of 30,000 people to lose their jobs.
- A national industrial company moves its headquarters to the local community and creates 1,250 immediate jobs.
- A local employer plans to expand its employee base by at least 1,000 workers per year dependent upon the availability of qualified workers.
- National and state legislation mandates are enacted for the use of college funds for non-citizens and will be effective in 120 days.
- A large new regional shopping mall is being constructed in the community.
- The state is experiencing a shortage of teachers and healthcare workers; the governor has called for suggestions to solve the problem.
- The state has passed legislation that offers significant tax incentives for purchasing and driving alternative fuel vehicles.
- Using information obtained through your readings, class lectures and discussions, your visit to a community college, and your research, as a learning team brainstorm at least three potential community college responses to the community issue/concern. For each proposed response, consider the following factors:
- Historical perspectives: Is this undertaking aligned with the purpose and mission of a community college? Is there a precedent for a similar intervention at other community colleges?
- Governance and organizational issues: What are the issues related to governance? Are the proposed responses within the power of the governing bodies? Are there legal or ethical issues? What are the potential effects on the organizational structure of a community college?
- Funding concerns: What types of costs would be incurred?Where will the funding come from?
- Student populations and student services: What are the effects on current students? How could student demographics be affected? What will be the effect on student services?
- Curriculum and instruction: What effect could your potential response have on curricula?
- What types of resources—space and personnel—might be needed to accommodate the proposed responses?
- Faculty roles: What are some implications for faculty and support personnel? Will the proposed responses require specialized faculty?
- After your Learning Team has discussed and analyzed the potential responses and the issues and concerns related to each potential response, select one response to recommend.
- Prepare a 12- to 15-slide Microsoft®PowerPoint® presentation. Include the following:
- A summary of at least three proposed responses
- Identification of the selected response
1)An explanation of factors that led you to recommend the selected response
2)A prediction of the outcomes the response will bring
- Prepare and submit a reference list with at least seven entries researched to support your learning team’s recommendation.
- Prepare and submit a copy of your Learning Team’s presentation slides.
Students may want to consider posting this assignment to their personal Presentation Portfolio in TaskStream. (This is not required.)
