Week of: June 27th
Crew is the first 30min everyday. No School Thursday
Components of Crew / M / T / W / FOpening/Greeting / The director begins by turning to face the person to the right…
“Good Morning Samantha Would you like a hug, a high five or a handshake?”
(Other variations can be used here… booty bump? Sparkles? Firecracker?)
“Good Morning John. I would like a high five.”
Samantha then turns to her right and greets the next person… Until the greeting has been passed all the way around the circle. / Participants invent their own “special handshake” or “greeting”.
First they find a partner that they haven’t yet worked with. Then they invent a new handshake that must have four movements and two sounds.
Participants are sent off to invent their “handshake”.
After 5 minutes they come back to the circle and sit. Those partnerships that are willing to share stand in the center of the circle and demonstrate their handshakes.
The rest of the circle celebrates each sharing with clicking fingers. / The director begins by turning to face the person to the right…

Message / Good Morning,
Welcome to the second day of PD. Yesterday we all learned about what crew is. Think about it for 30 seconds and be ready to share what some of the key ideas were.
See you in the circle.
Director – / Good Morning,
We have a lot of work to do today to set up for the arrival of the kids.
- List your agenda here…
See you in the circle.
Director – / Good Morning,
Most of you have met the person you are going to work with throughout the academy. What are some challenges you think you could
See you in the circle.
Director – / Good Morning,
What character traits do you think are going to be important for us to focus on during the Summer Academy? These are the character traits that we will talk/read about in Crew. Write one of these character traits on a post it note and stick it under this message.
See you in the circle.

Activity/Initiatives / A Warm Wind Blows
Need: Enough chairs for everyone, minus one
Participants sit in a chair in the circle.
One volunteer stands in the middle of the circle. (No empty chairs)
The person in the middle says, “ A warm wind blows for everyone who wears glasses…”
Anyone who does, and the person who asked the question must get up and run across the circle to find a new seat. You can NOT take the seat of the person next to you. There will be one person left in the middle who must ask the next question.
Questions could be as deep or shallow as the group wishes…
A warm wind blows for people who like chocolate ice-cream better than vanilla.
A warm wind blows for people who have worked with the homeless. / Please, Please Smile
Need: Enough chairs for everyone
Participants sit in a chair in the circle.
One volunteer stands in the middle of the circle. (No empty chairs)
The volunteer leans down to the person of his or her choice, looks them deep in the eyes, and says “Honey, if you love me, would you please, please smile?”
The recipient of this responds, “Honey, I love you, but I just can’t smile.”
That easy! BUT the recipient can not smile, smirk, turn up their lips or cover their mouths. The volunteer in the middle can not touch the recipient at all.
The volunteer continues until someone smiles, and then trades places with the person who FINALLY smiles. / Desert Survivor
Hand out the paper.
Give the following instructions to the group:
Work/think
individually for a
few minutes. Use the time to read over the paper again and formulate your thoughts.
-1.
Work together to point a chair person to facilitate the process
-1.
Decide as a group on the correct order.
One person records the order. / One of the character traits we may want to look at is compassion.
We’re going to read a short story about some people who showed compassion.
First we need a definition for compassion.
(Write the groups definition up so that everyone can see it.)
Okay, let’s read the story “Stray” and figure out who showed compassion in this story.
Read the story however you think works best for your group.
Debrief
Specific Questions / What does this game teach you?
What did you learn about the people in our group today?
How would you present this activity to kids to ensure that safety was our #1 priority?
Would kids like this game? Why or why not? Can we modify it to make it more challenging? / Sometimes it’s important to be silly with the students so they see us as human and they have fun!
What do we have to think about when preparing an activity that is “JUST for fun”? / What’s the point of this activity?
Did you find that priorities vary depending on the GOAL, or PURPOSE you come up with?
Air force pilots, unless in enemy territory and in danger are told to stay with the plane. Was there anyone that wanted to leave? Why?
What does this teach us about priorities?
What does this teach us about communication? / Who shows compassion in this story? How?
Has anyone ever shown you compassion before? How did it make you feel?
How does showing compassion make a difference in the culture of a classroom?
