·  Practice Essay Prompts:

o  Following chapter readings in “student study skills” sections

·  How to practice an essay:

o  PEEL! (3.3 – pg.186)

o  Write intro in full – THESIS!

o  Opening sentence of each para.

o  Bullet point key info in each para. Including examples/evidence

o  Write conclusion in full – tie back to argument and prompt

Paper 1: The Move to Global War: Pgs.64-102

This prescribed subject focuses on military expansion from 1931-1941. Two case studies are prescribed – Japanese Expansion (1931-41) and German/Italian Expansion (1930-40) Areas the source-based questions will focus are:

·  Causes of Expansion (consider domestic, ideological, and economic issues as causes – I.E., the GD)

·  Key Events

·  International responses to expansion

Other helpful hints:

·  TIMING!!! (pace yourself – save 25 minutes for question 4!)

·  Each question increases in difficulty

·  Q1&4 ask you to “read between the lines.” Use quotes that support your answer, but always explain the quotes

·  Justify ALL points with examples

·  Stick to the question – ex: In compare/contrast, you’re looking for ways in which sources say the same or different things. Pick out a quote from one source & support it with a quote from another source. Make comparisons clear!

·  Points made should equal points each question is worth

·  Review tips for analyzing political cartoons

·  Q4 will test your “cross-referencing” skills

·  For Q4, you will need to integrate the documents with your own knowledge in your answer. It is important that you include both! Identify key points made in the documents and then develop these with your own knowledge/content evidence

·  Remember to judge each individual source on its strengths or weaknesses; avoid generalizations like “Source A is unreliable because it’s a secondary source” BOTH can be reliable or unreliable. Also, just because a source is biased doesn’t mean it’s of no use to us (ex: A CCP poster produced in the 1970s about economic plans might not provide us with accurate information about the plans, but it might tell us something useful about the sort of image China wants the public to accept)

·  Q2 will ask you to evaluate the values and limitations of a source, with reference to origin, purpose and content. Make sure you understand what each one of these means!!! (Pages 12-13)

Paper 2: World History Topics: Pgs. 103-139

*2 major topics within this paper:

Topic 11: Causes and effects of 20th Century Wars

·  Content outlined on page 105

·  Exam question will require specific reference to 20th century wars and some will require discussion of wars from more than one region of the world. For questions about “cross-regional wars,” you may refer to the First and Second World War in a regional context (ex: WWII in the Pacific), but may NOT use the same war in a different region (ex: WWII in Europe.)

·  Different types and nature of 20th century warfare (Civil, limited, guerilla, total)

•  All essays should have an introduction w/ thesis, body paragraphs (1st sentence is main idea) and a conclusion

•  Consider the following points when planning your essay:

•  Does the essay specify dates? How does this affect your choice of info to include?

•  Does the essay title give clues as to the structure you should follow?

•  Is there a quote you need to come back to/explain in your conclusion?

•  Does the question require you to make a judgment?

•  What is the question asking you to do? Make sure you understand your command terms!
