Introduction of Master and PhD program

(Materials Science and Engineering)

1.  Overview

Materials Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, as the first level discipline, is one of the first national key subjects. It is composed of three second level disciplines: materials science, materials processing engineering and materials physics and chemistry. Among them, material science and materials processing engineering are national key subjects, distributing over School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Research Institute of Micro/Nano Science and Technology, etc. There are first level discipline doctorate conferral right and post-doctoral research center. Furthermore, Materials Science and Engineering is one of the first state key subjects, with the “World Bank Loan Project”, “211 Project” and “985 Project”, as well as “Changjiang Chair Professors” post setting. First level subject boasts a great number of faculties. The present number of doctoral tutors is about 60, including world-famous scientists: Academician ZuyaoXu, Yaohe Zhao, Xueyu Ruan and Jiansheng Pan, and several influential young and middle aged experts. In addition, School of Materials Science and Engineering boasts State key Laboratory of Metal Matrix Composites, Die & Mold CAD Engineering Research Center, Light Alloy Net Forming Engineering Research Center, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Materials Laser Processing and Modification, Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Magnesium Materials and Applications, Advanced Heat Treatment & Surface Modification Engineering Research Center of China Mechanical Federation, Shanghai Welding Technology Institute and Polymer Materials Laboratory. The academic foundation of Materials Science and Engineering consists of “Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Materials”, “Fundamentals of Materials Science”, “Theories of Materials Processing”, etc. With these theories, modern materials preparation & processing technology, novel analysis and testing technology, we have undertaken a great number of important research assignments for a long time, such as national key engineering projects, state science and technology key projects, national natural science foundation projects, “863” projects, “973” projects and projects at the provincial and ministerial level, as well as projects supported by large and medium-sized key enterprises. Moreover, our department has energetically conducted cooperation and academic exchange with many renowned universities and corporations at home and abroad. Excellent students are sent abroad (America, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, etc.) regularly to pursue master’s degree, doctor’s degree and to have short-term academic exchanges.
