The November 2013 TSL Workshops in diagnostic histopathology report and attendance list

This workshops series was based on a review and discussions of the cases included in the fifth circulation of the Nigerian National Diagnostic Histopathology EQA. The theme was GI pathology with a subtheme of skin tumours requiring immunohistochemistry for diagnosis. The main talk for the workshops was on lessons that could be learnt from the United Kingdom Bowel Cancer Screening programme. The faculty comprised Dr Oluwasola Olayiwola - consultant pathologist at UCH Ibadan, Prof. FB Abdulareem – consultant pathologist at LUTH Lagos, Dr. Uche Igbokwe – consultant histopathologist in Romford Essex England and by telepathology Dr. Olorunda Rotimi – consultant histopathologist Leeds England.

The first workshop held in Kano (for the first time ever) at the pathology department of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th November. Prof. Abdulkareem and Dr. Igbokwe were the resource persons in attendance. Unfortunately the telepathology session with Dr. Rotimi was limited by poor connections. However overall it was a very productive time of interactive learning and well prepared presentations. A total of 17 participants were present including visitors from Bauchi, Sokoto and Zaria.

The workshop in Lagos held at LUTH on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th November with Dr. Oluwasola and Dr. Igbokwe as the resource persons in attendance. Thanks to adequate internet connections there was a full contribution from Dr. Rotimi in Leeds. A total of 22 participants were present including visitors from LASUTH, Zaria, Ibadan and Bida.

The next workshop was in Uyo (for the first time ever) at the University teaching hospital Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd December. A total of 14 participants were present including visitors from Calabar, Port-Harcourt and Lagos. The resource persons present were Prof. Abdulkareem and Dr. Igbokwe. We were very graciously welcomed by a doyen of pathology in Nigeria, in the person of retired Prof. Ed B Attah who took time out to come in and say hello on the first day. Once more poor internet connection meant that Dr Rotimi could not contribute to the proceedings.

The final leg of the workshops series was at UBTH Benin on Thursday 5th December. The program had to be compressed into one day because of the tragic incident of a few weeks earlier with the death of one of the senior registrars in pathology who was to be buried on Friday. The resource persons present were Dr. Oluwasola and Dr. Igbokwe. Dr. Rotimi was only able to make limited contributions due to poor internet connectivity. There were a total of 26 participants including visitors from Owerri, Nnewi and Asaba.

The key points to note in this workshop series are as follows.

1)  There was a fall in the submission of responses to the EQA to 27 compared to 32 last time. There was also a fall in total attendance to 79 compared to 84 last time. This is despite the fact that a lot of participants and respondents were new. The main reason for this is apparently a debilitating 4 month industrial action by resident doctors all over Nigeria that just came to an end a few weeks to the commencement of the workshops. In any case there was an attempt to get structured feedback from the participants by means of a questionnaire study addressing every aspect of the project. We hope an analysis of this will inform further develpments.

2)  The attempt at use of telepathology did not really succeed due to less than optimal internet connectivity in most parts of the country outside Lagos. Despite the financial implications, all efforts must continue to ensure physical attendance of overseas resource persons.

3)  The use of local resource persons has continued to be a great success, stimulating interest in a different way than before.
