Application Guidance Notes with Examples

Applications are assessed by two independent assessors before being considered by the Accreditation Panel. Both Assessors and Panel are chosen for their knowledge of your area of expertise.Your application should give enough information to assure them that your inclusion on the Register is justified. You should also give contact details (email addresses etc) so your claims can be verified.

If you have not already done so, you will require to Register with the site by giving a few simple personal details. This will set you up with a “My account’ page, through which you will also access your CPD record. In your ‘My account’ page is a link ‘Apply for Accreditation on line’.

Please list up to three qualifications. For each one you are asked to give

Options are: Scientist (Associate); Animal Scientist (Certified); Animal Technologist (Associate); Animal Technologist (Certified). Post-nominals are : R. Anim. Sci.; R. Anim. Technol. Note: A scientist acquires knowledge through scientific method, while a technologist is a user of science. Certified is the professional level, while associate is for those in the earlier stages of career development.

Main area of principal professional activity

You should enter one (preferably) or two (maximum) areas of professional activity. It is recommended you use a descriptor from the list noted below, although you are allowed to enter your own descriptor. You can have up to two, separated by a semi-colon.

Example: Allied trades and Industries, Animal care and health, Recreational animals, Veterinary, Animal product processing, Business and commerce, Consultancy, Government, Manufacturing, Primary production, Public relations, media and journalism, Public sector, Research, Investigation and Development, Retail, Service, Student, Teaching and Training, Other.

Your choices for designation and level, and main area of professional activity will define: who you are in Professional terms, how you will appear to others on the Public Register, how the elements of your initial application will be weighed by the Accreditation Panel, what criteria the Accreditation Panel will use in assessing your application, and how the appropriateness of your subsequent CPD activities (for Re-Registration) will be judged.

Competencies

Please provide evidence of up to nine categories of relevant skills, experience and competencies which justify your inclusion on the register (completion of all nine sectors is not a prerequisite for accreditation.)

Please give each competency a heading and adequate detail so assessors can verify your abilities.

Written works in the public domain.

Include reports, technical communications, scientific papers, articles, business reports, expert evidence, or any relevant other. Give sufficient references to allow verification. Please give trackable references. If you have no publications put ‘none’. Publications are not a prerequisite for accreditation.

EXAMPLES OF SORTS OF PUBLICATIONS: Technical handbooks; Scientific journal papers and book chapters; Proceedings of Scientific and Technical Conferences; Advisory leaflets and instruction manuals; Scientific and technical articles; Publications on the web; Broadcasts; Contributions to public understanding of Science and Technology; Any other

Consultancy and similar activities.

Include activities and experience in the general area of consultancy work to the benefit of others. Give specific examples and means of verification (such as Email addresses, websites and references).

EXAMPLES OF SORTS OF CONSULTANCY: Field and Farms contracts (Give details of farms and specific types of work done); Feed industry, pharmaceuticals, and other Allied Trades (Give details of scale of operations and the scale of your influence in shaping practice); Retained consultancies (Give details, scope and means of verification); Expert witness and public service activities; Any other

Knowledge and information seeking (research and development).

R&D initiation, execution or management, including abilities that enable research & development. Include experience in transfer of scientific and technological findings to user communities. Also refer to aspects of your research that relate to care of the wider environment and of welfare, and compliance with ethical codes, regulations and safety. Give specific examples and means of verification (such as Email addresses, websites and references).

EXAMPLES OF SORTS OF RESEARCH: Original Applicant and Leader for research programmes and/or grants (give titles of programmes, purposes, indications of scale and financial values); Activities as Team leader or team member with Colleagues and others (give details of activities, other team members; Programme outputs (utility, papers, presentations, patents, industry uptake etc); Brief summary of previous research record;Competency in statistical analysis and data interpretation; Use of theoretical and practical methods to analyse and solve problems (eg, engineering, surveys, development of in-vivo and in-vitro research techniques, modelling, laboratory techniques, licenses and so on); Any other

EXAMPLES OF SORTS OF KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNICAL TRANSFER: Presentations to BSAS and similar (give references); Talks to in-house and public technological conferences and discussion groups (give examples); Invited talks to farmer’s meetings; Talks to local Schools and Societies; On-farm practical demonstrations and training classes; Involvement in production of Technical Manuals; Any other

Provision of goods and services (including sales).

Include all those areas where you have been involved in selling or otherwise delivering goods and services (including technical sales and sales support). Give specific examples and means of verification (such as Email addresses, websites and references).

EXAMPLES OF SORTS OF PROVISION OF GOODS AND SERVICES: Technical sales (detail company, scale of activity and products); Scientific and patent product sales (detail); General sales; Sales Management and oversight; Strategy development for delivery of services; Programme development and client customization together with company scientists and technologists; Experience in particular sectors, products and species; Provision of expert advice on product use and animal efficiency, productivity and wellbeing; Provision of special knowledge (such as environmental protection; carbon footprint etc. Give justification); Logistics; Advertising and information provision; Any other

Teaching activities.

Include all those areas where you have been involved in teaching others; either in academic or similar institutions, or in the workplace, or as a part of your professional activities. Give specific examples and means of verification (such as Email addresses, websites and references).

Initiating, managing and finalising strategies, policies programmes and projects.
