So What Statements

A So What Statement begins the concluding paragraph and it tells why your subject is so important. Offer a general explanation telling why the audience should care about your topic. Make it general, and DON’T touch upon the reasons given in your thesis. They are too specific. Your So What Statement needs to be broader.

Prompt 1: Would you rather have the ability to fly or the ability to talk to animals?

Thesis: I would rather have the ability to fly because I could travel in an exciting way, I could enjoy beautiful, ariel views, and I could exercise in an entertaining fashion.

So What Statement:

Prompt 2: How will your life be different 25 years from now? Explain.

Thesis: My life will be different twenty years from now because I will be working in India, I will have a spouse and ten children, and I will be earning five million a year.

So What Statement:

Prompt 3: What are the qualities that your best friend has?

Thesis: My best friend has many amazing qualities: she is unselfish, she is trustworthy, and she is a lover of ice cream.

So What Statement:

Prompt 4: If you could protest something, what would it be and why?

Thesis: If I could protest something it would be hunting because it is dangerous, it causes car accidents, and it is a cruel practice.

So What Statement:

Prompt 5: What is the best advice you have ever received and why was it so helpful?

Thesis: The best advice I ever received was “Do your best, relax, and trust.” It was so helpful because it showed me the importance of working hard, it revealed the value of being calm, and it illuminated how powerful trust can be.

So What Statement:

Prompt 6: If you had the power to change three things in your world, what would they be and why?

Thesis: If I had the power to change three things in the world, I would prevent hunger, extinguish disease, and provide an unshakable sense of peace for every human.

So What Statement:

Prompt 7: If you could become another person, who would you be and why?

Thesis: If I could become another person, I would be the President of the United States because I could change laws that are not fair, alter the way health care is set up in our nation, and work to allow people to achieve their dreams.

So What Statement:

Prompt 8: Tell about a situation where you were not successful and what you learned from the experience.

Thesis: I was not successful in earning an A in my biology class, and I learned that hard work does not always get me the good grade, that the reward of studying is increased knowledge (not always a high grade), and that only I can make a difficult situation a good one with a positive attitude.

Prompt 9: If you could invent something, what would it be and why?

Thesis: If I could invent something, it would be a time machine because I could go back in time and fix mistakes, I could meet and learn from interesting people, and I could ease my own sense of curiosity regarding future events.

So What Statement:

Prompt 10: What is your favorite restaurant and why should people eat there?

Thesis: My favorite restaurant is The Olive Garden, and people should eat there because the food is divine, the service is incredible, and the menu prices are relatively cheap.

So What Statement:
