A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO CONGRATULATE STELLA T. MANIOS OF GREENVILLE COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY YEARS OF CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are delighted to learn that Stella T. Manios will celebrate her centennial birthday on May 3, 2017; and
Whereas, born on May 3, 1917, in the early part of the twentieth century, she has witnessed many remarkable social changes, technological advancements, and international developments that have spanned the globe from that time into the second decade of the twentyfirst century; and
Whereas, the daughter of A. J. and Stavroula Theodore who immigrated to the United States from Greece, Mrs. Manios accompanied her mother during the Great Depression as she took meals to the poor and widows in the community; and
Whereas, a Greenville native and lifelong resident, she followed her mother’s example and began community service at an early age by raising funds for the Community Chest, which later became known as the United Way. By 1941, she had received an award from the Community Chest for her significant impact; and
Whereas, Mrs. Manios, the older sister of former Lieutenant Governor Nick Theodore, served for forty years as the cochair of the annual Grecian Festival in Greenville, and even after her time as cochair, she still procured and collected items for the festival’s silent auction; and
Whereas, together with her beloved husband, the late Georgie Manios, she reared three fine children who blessed her with the affection of five adoring grandchildren; and
Whereas, Mrs. Manios is a stalwart and devoted member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Greenville, remaining active in the Women’s Philoptochos (Friend of the Poor) Society as a board member and in the Daughters of Penelope at her church. She continues to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and to help Safe Harbor as well; and
Whereas, among her numerous awards for community service, she was honored by His Grace Bishop Alexios for the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Atlanta with the Archangel Michael Honor Award in 2002 in recognition of her contributions to the church’s Coastal Conference region; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday, and the members join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Stella T. Manios of Greenville County on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many years of continued health and happiness.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Stella T. Manios.
