Student Guide to Mrs Calimpong’s Literacy Strategies class

Welcome to a new school year! Below, you will find some brief guidelines that will help you better understand the rules, procedures, and grading policies for my classes.

Each day when you come to class, you will begin a short warm-up assignment that will either be posted on the board or the overhead screen. Once completed, we will go over the answers as a class and make corrections.

If you need additional time to finish your assessments, you will be given one additional day during class time. If you need more time after that, you must schedule a time outside the school day with your teacher. Remember, the more class time you take to complete your assessment, the more you miss in class.

Resource and Strategies Rules

1. Come prepared to class

2. Respect yourself, teachers, classmates, school staff, and property

3. Make good use of your time

4. Show appropriate behavior in class

Interpretation of the classroom rules

1. Come prepared to class

· Bring homework, notes, tests and textbooks if necessary. You will not be allowed to return back to class to obtain materials that you forgot.

· Be ready to participate in class discussions

2. Respect yourself, teachers, classmates, school staff, and property.

· Treat others like you want to be treated

· Foul language will not be tolerated

· Your behavior does affect your classmates’ learning environment

3. Make good use of your time

· If there is extra time at the end of class or if I give you time to work on homework BE PRODUCTIVE. Do NOT waste class time.

· When you are working on a project, WORK. Do not use the time as social hour. If you do not understand the project or assignment, you need to ask questions!!! You are responsible for your own learning!!!

4. Show appropriate behavior in class

· Pay attention to whoever has the floor (another student, a teacher)

· Do not be a distraction to another classmate

Failure to adhere to these rules will result in the following consequences:

1st offense: Verbal warning

2nd offense: Verbal warning/conversation with teacher in hallway

3rd offense: Move student away from group

4th offense: Parent phone call

5th offense: Office referral

Bathroom Breaks

You must take bathroom breaks before class, unless other arrangements have been discussed.

Water Breaks

You may bring your own water bottles to class and refill them in the classroom at the sink. Only water may be consumed during class. Sodas, energy drinks or caffeine drinks will not be permitted. Excessive or disruptive water breaks could result in a consequence.

Gum

Gum is not allowed on campus or in any classroom.

Cell Phones

Cell phone use is not allowed during class. Students with cell phones in their possession must keep them turned off and inside their backpack during class and transitions. Violation of this rule will result in parental contact.

Fire Drills

In case of a fire drill, line up quickly/quietly and follow me out the door in a straight line to the fire exit.

Homework

Homework may be assigned to my Resource class only. Strategies students will not be assigned additional homework by me, as it will already have been assigned by Ms. Bartlett.

Punctuality

Being on time for class is mandatory. Students will need a teacher or office pass if they arrive late/after bell has rung.

Portfolios

Each student will have a portfolio that he or she will be responsible for maintaining. Portfolio contents will consist of daily warmups, handouts, example problems, practice problems, and academic progress tracking sheets.

Detention

After school detention may be assigned due to missing materials, assignments and tardies as determined by the teacher. Written notification will be sent home with students to be signed by the parent and returned the following day. If the form is not returned, discipline action by Administration may occur.

Grading

Grades will be weighted based on an 80/20 ratio. 80% of the grade includes: Teacher assessments, district assessments. 20% of the grade includes: Daily warmups, homework completion, and exit tickets.

The grading scale will be in accordance with the Higley Unified School District policy as follows:

100%-90%-A

89%-80%-B

79%-70%-C

69%-60%-D

59% or below-F

Work Improvement

Daily assignments and homework may be improved upon through corrections made by the student. Redone papers should be attached to the original assignment. The improved grade will be an average of the original grade and the redo. Quizzes and tests (excluding the final) may also be retaken, provided prior time slot arrangement with me.

Re-do’s/re-takes

Students may re-do assignments within 2 weeks of due date to receive full credit.

Students may re-take assessments by the end of the quarter/unit.

Students may not re-take assessments if they have missing assignments.

A re-do/re-take form signed by the parent must be completed prior to re-do.

Late Assignments

Late assignments will be accepted with prior teacher discussion/approval.

Plagiarism/Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is expected on all assignments. Plagiarism is defined as presenting the work of another as one’s own. Cheating on an assessment is another activity that violates ethics and school rules. Any work that exhibits cheating/plagiarism will result in a zero, parental notification, and possible disciplinary action.

Remember I believe in you! Together, we can make it a great year J
