Constitution Of the Gospel Choir

Article I:Name and Purpose.

Section 1:Name. This organization shall be known as the “Voices of Soulful Praise”.

Section 2:Purpose. The purpose of the choir is to express our Christian heritage through multi-cultural fellowship, celebrating the richness of African American culture through gospel music. Our purpose is not geared toward entertainment, but it is to expose the student body, faculty, and staff to a type of worship and praise that is relevant to all cultures.

Article II:Membership. Any student of Houghton College who is from, any ethnic background, who has a sincere love for God, and wished to share this love through gospel music. (Audition required)

Article III:Meetings. The President shall call regular meetings once a month for the conducting of business, planning engagements, providing encouragement, and a time for spiritual fellowship.

Article IV:Election of Officers and Term of Office.

Section 1:The members shall annually elect the President, Vice-President, treasurer, and Secretary. The elections shall be held on March 10th, 1994 for the offices pf the following year. A majority of at least two-thirds of the members must be necessary for election.

Section 2:The term of office for all shall be one year starting at the beginning of the school year.

Article V:Duties of Officers.

Section 1:The President will be present at all of the organization’s meetings. He/she shall have the power to arrange engagements, schedule rehearsals, schedule auditions for perspective new members, and appoint committees.

Section 2:The Vice president shall fulfill the duties of the president if he/she is not present and provide assistance to the President if requested. He/she shall oversee all advertising and publicity operations pertaining to the organization.

Section 3:The Treasurer shall maintain a record of all income and expenditures. He/she shall oversee all fund-raising efforts on behalf of the organization.

Section 4:The Secretary shall keep a record of all meetings and handle all correspondence as well as be responsible for all the transactions of the organization.

Article VI:Advisor. The staff advisor will aid the choir in setting goals, forming cohesion and help create and sustain a sense of stability in the group.

Article VII:Finances. To finance trips or the purchase of sheet music, the organization may carry out fund-raising projects as approved by the appropriate committees of Houghton College. There will be a membership due which will be decided upon by the officers.

Article VIII:Amendments.

Section 1:This constitution maybe amended and by laws added at any regular meeting according to election procedure as stated in Article IV, Section 1.

Section 2:The above procedure maybe used only when discussed at the previous meeting.
