Pro Rata Assistant Lecturer in Electronic –
Short Stay post based in Nanjing Tech University in Jiangsu province, China, for 2 sessions of between 3 – 6 weeks each over 12 months

The Institute has a collaboration agreement with Nanjing Tech University in Jiangsu province China. The agreement has resulted in NJUT running the first 3 years of our Electronic Engineering programme in China with students then transferring to Dublin for the final year of the programme. This is a joint level 8 Engineering Programme with Nanjing Tech University that requires ITT Dublin lecturers to teach a number of modules during the initial 3 years of the Programme in Nanjing, China.

We intend to place a Pro Rata Assistant Lecturer in Electronic Engineering in Nanjing University to deliver lectures through English for two 4-6 week sessions, with one occurring in the period September /November 2016 and the other occurring in the February / March period of 2017. The appointee would only be employed by the Institute for the duration of each of these sessions.

The School of Engineering

The School of Engineering comprises the Departments of Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The role of the School is to organise the academic activities of the two Departments, support interdepartmental and interdisciplinary programmes as well as administering the strategic development of the two departments.

The Department of Electronic Engineering

The Dept of Electronic Engineering at The Institute of Technology Tallaght has specialist staff across the spectrum of modern Electronic Engineering disciplines, ranging from traditional areas such as Electrical systems, Analogue and Digital Electronics, to more specific areas such as Telecommunications, Computer Networks, Digital Signal Processing, Computer Aided Design, IC Design, Microelectronic Device Fabrication, Microprocessor Systems Design and Computer Programming. The Electronics Engineering department boasts a large number of very well equipped hardware and computer based laboratories as well as a specialist Microelectronics Fabrication Laboratory. IT Tallaght graduates in Electronic Engineering are in demand and are finding challenging and interesting employment in high technology industry which is rich in variety and opportunities for future career growth and advancement. Undergraduate Programmesare currently offered in the fields of Electronic Engineering and Energy Engineering. Members of the Department are also actively involved in a number of research areas.

The Department of Electronic Engineering currently delivers aB.Eng(Hons) in Electronic Engineering as a joint Programme with Nanjing Tech University in Nanjing, China.

Person requirements

Candidates will be expected to be self-starters, able to operate independently. In addition, they should have excellent interpersonal skills including patience, diplomacy and cross-cultural awareness.

Assistant Lecturer in Electronic Engineering - Qualification & Experience Requirements

The minimum qualification for an Assistant Lecturer post is a primary Honours degree in Electronic Engineering (NQAI Level 8) or an equivalent qualification, together with at least 3 years relevant post graduate experience. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a proven record of industrial or research experience and ideally a strong commitment to teaching.

The selected Candidate will be expected to deliver lectures in a variety of modules to students in Nanjing University and an in-depth knowledge of the following areas would be preferable:

  • Computer Network Engineering
  • Computer Programming
  • Digital and Analogue Communication Systems

The Department of Electronic Engineering is seeking an excellent academic to deliver two short term academic lecturing sessions within a twelve month period during the academic year 2016-2017.The person appointed will be expected to stay in Nanjing, China for a maximum period of 6 weeks. During this time the person appointed will be expected to make a strong contribution to the lecturing programme of the Department as part of the joint B.Eng(Hons) in Electronic Engineering which is delivered with Nanjing Tech University. The person will undertake lecturing duties on the Department’s undergraduate programme particulary in the area of computer networks, analog and digitial communication and software programming.

Principal Duties Teaching:

All the Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching duties are assigned by the Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering. The lecturers duties will include:

  • Lecturing to undergraduate students at Nanjing Tech University who are undertaking a B.Eng.(Hons) inElectronic Engineering Programme. This role will include lecturingto students from various years of the Programe, providing practical laboratory sessions, supervising project workincluding final year projects, assessing the students in the classroom, the laboratory and examinations and marking assessments and examinations. The apointee may also be requested to assist other lecturers by providing laboratory support while based in NJTech University. The role also includes contribution to the development of module syllabi, enhancement of teaching quality, involvement in promotional activities for Programmes and engagement in outreach activities.

Annual Salary scale

Assistant Lecturer (New Entrant):€35,743 to €49,487 pa

Starting salary will be at the minimum point of the relevant scale only. Candidates should note that the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in accordance with Government pay policy.

Pensions

The appointee will become a member of the appropriate public service pension scheme. Broadly, if the appointee:

(a) served in a public service body as a pensionable public servant on 31 December 2012, then the terms of the Education Sector Superannuation Scheme shall apply to the appointee; or

(b) first serves in a public service body as a pensionable public servant on or after 1 January 2013 or has not, prior to appointment, served in a public service body as a pensionable public servant, then the provisions of the Public Service Pensions Single Scheme will apply.

As the rules relating to membership of these schemes contain a number of exceptions, if the appointee has any queries as to which pension scheme provisions apply to them, these should be raised as soon as practicable after appointment with the HR Manager. The appointee shall be obliged to make pension contributions in accordance with the rules of the applicable scheme and the appointee shall be subject to the applicable scheme’s provisions as amended from time to time.

Proposed merger of Three Institutes

Please note that it is planned that three institutions in the Dublin region – Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown (ITB) and Institute of Technology, Tallaght (ITTD) will merge into a single institution to form the new Dublin Institute of Technology, prior to seeking designation as a Technological University for Dublin. Thereafter staff may be assigned or re-assigned to any of the buildings / centres in the new Dublin Institute of Technology, at the discretion of the Institute.
