Picture this ....A serene snow-covered hill top. The sun glistens off the snow, just peaking over the tree tops. Silence…

SWOOSH…. Five engineers, clad in Waterloo’s traditional coveralls, come screaming over the hilltop at over 60 km/hr, roaring at the top of their lungs... riding a CONCRETE TOBOGGAN!

Great Northern Concrete

Toboggan Race

The GNCTR began in 1974, as a joint venture between the American Concrete Institute and the University of Alberta. The event was created as a Canadian version of the American Concrete Canoe race.

Since its initiation, the GNCTR has challenged its participants to use creativity, skill, and innovation in the design and construction of a concrete toboggan

In the first week of February 2004, the University of Ottawa will host the 30th annual Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race.

Objectives

Team toboggans are evaluated on their concrete mix, reinforcement, curing, and braking system. Teams are evaluated on spirit, technical exposition, documentation, and aesthetics. In order to be crowned winner, a sled must be fast, innovative, and technically sound.

The Team

The Waterloo team is traditionally made up of 4th year Civil Engineering students. This year’s GNCTR team is comprised of a group of students dedicated to continuing the University’s winning tradition. 7 students have already spent numerous hours completing a slab, frame, and brake design.

In conjunction with your generous sponsorship, our fundraising initiatives not only help us raise funds for the competition, but also show our dedication and commitment to success.

To date, our internal fundraising efforts have amounted to approximately $4000.
