This semester your student will be a participating member of my Weight Training class. All students are expected to dress out and participate, as well as maintain a positive attitude and display sportsmanship. Students will increase muscle tone, strength, and flexibility as well as their overall level of total fitness

WEIGHT TRAINING/PHYSICAL TRAINING

Equipment Needed: Shorts (no Soffe or spandex), shirts, tennis shoes, composition book

Note: Students are required to dress and participate daily.

Class: Weight Room, Track, Gym, as well as other designated areas.

Course Philosophy and Purpose

The purpose of this course is to inform students of the importance of exercise in attaining and maintaining a high quality of life. Students will gain scientific knowledge about strength training principles, cardio respiratory training, anthropometric, strength and body composition measurements. Students will improve overall level of strength and total fitness.

Course Objectives

  • Establish a positive attitude about lifetime physical fitness.
  • Understand the theory of progressive resistance training.
  • To gain knowledge of the benefits and alleged real hazards of training.
  • Safety and spotting techniques
  • Understand training heart rate and the consequential effects of overtraining.
  • To become aware of present physical condition and individual potential.
  • To know how to evaluate progress and adapt exercise to each level of physical condition.
  • To increase muscle tone, strength, and flexibility.
  • To learn and properly execute the different lifts and apparatus utilized in class.
  • Understand the difference in body weight and body fat.
  • Understand the physiological changes that occur during exercise program.
  • To learn the musculature which specific exercises develop.
  • Be able to develop and individualized training program for improving strength and cardio respiratory capacity.
  • To have knowledge of different methods of evaluating strength, muscular endurance, aerobic capacity, flexibility, and body composition.
  • To list and differentiate fitness factors.
  • To gain knowledge and understanding about the role of nutrition, rehydration, and exercise in weight management.

Grading System

  • 75% - dress and participation
  • 25% - testing (strength, fitness, and/or written)

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT POLICY

Physical Education Class Guidelines

Instructors: Coach Buchanan, Coach Raynor, Coach Brown, Coach Iseman

  1. Be prompt: Students should be in the locker room, gym, or weight room before the tardy bell rings. See instructor.
  1. Be prepared. Students will dress daily for physical education class and come to class with materials needed for health.
  1. Dress out gear. Appropriate shirts and gym pants are required. Muscle shirts, spandex, Soffe shorts, and other short shorts are not allowed. Shirt sleeves should extend to a point on the upper arm not to expose the armpit. Warm up pants and sweatshirts are allowed. Logos of poor taste are not allowed. Tennis shoes and white socks are also needed. Students will not be allowed to participate with any shoes other than a tennis shoe. Students must change clothes before and after class.
  1. Food, drinks, gum, and hats are not allowed.Due to the importance of rehydration, plastic bottles of water will be allowed.
  1. Cell phones, iPods, iPads, and other electronic devices will be allowed only with the expressed permission of the instructor in order to complete an instructional activity or objective.
  1. The school staff or physical education instructors are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Students need to bring a padlock to lock items in lockers during class. Gym lockers are to be used only during your particular class. Other classes throughout the day share these same lockers, so please do not leave personal gear or locks on the lockers.
  1. Locker rooms will be locked. Please take care of all needs prior to leaving locker room.
  1. Only notes signed from a licensed medical doctor may excuse the student from daily activities. Any student with an existing medical condition shall inform their instructor ASAP. All medical conditions shall be followed up with doctor’s documentation.
  1. Students are allowed to make up missed work due to an absence. We also have tutoring sessions. Check with your instructor for make up work and tutorial times.
  1. We do have shower facilities for students to use after class.
  1. All physical education classes have a designated area. See your instructor.
  1. Please help keep the gym, lobby, and locker rooms clean.
