Bank of Continuous Assessment Questions
Module 3
Health Related Physical Fitness Assessments
The following bank of questions has been developed in order to aid standardisation in continuous assessment in Module 3, across all centres providing the CEHF nationwide. All CA questions on Module 3 papers must come from this bank of questions and follow the procedures for CA in Module 3 detailed below and in the CEHF student manual and Tutor Support website. This bank of questions has been developed from submissions from NCEF Tutors and is copyright to the NCEF. This bank of questions should not be distributed to students. Questions may be copied from the bank below and pasted into the template supplied for CA papers or used in revision exercises.
CA Procedures Module 3
1. Practical assessment to include: Weighting 70%
• Sub-maximal CV tests: bike/treadmill
• Skinfold measurement
• Flexibility
• Muscle endurance
The form for the above is on the Tutor CD/website
2. Written Assessment to include the Principles of Training, Components of Fitness and calculation of formulae related to the fitness assessments.
35 minutes duration, 5 questions Weighting 30%
Each CA paper should contain:
1 x 10m question
4 x 15m questions
Papers should include questions from all areas mentioned in point 2 above
Storage: Please remember that all students written scripts and practical marking sheets must be stored for 18 months following UL Examinations Board. Scripts will be requested by UL External examiners for review from centres on a random selection basis.
Thank you for you cooperation with the above

- Describe the health related benefits of
(1) Improved Flexibility
(2) Improved CV Endurance
(10 marks)
Marking scheme: 1m per benefit to a max of 5m for each component
- Apply the FITT Principle to (1) Local Muscle Endurance
(2) Flexibility
(10 marks)
Marking scheme: 5m per correct application of FITT
3. Use the Karvonen Formula to find 85% of Johns’ MHR. John is 33 years old and has a resting heart rate of 50.
(10 marks)
(%MHR (max HR –RHR)) + RHR
Marking scheme: 10m for correct answer, lesser marks for correct process with an incorrect answer
- John is 30 years old and he has a resting heart rate of 55 bpm.
Using the Karvonen Formula find 85% of Johns Max Heart Rate (MHR).
Karvonen Formula: (% HR for training x (MHR – RHR)) + RHR
Marking scheme: 10m for correct answer, lesser marks if process is correct but calculation incorrect
- List and explain any 5 of the Principles of Training (15 marks)
Marking scheme; 1m for list & 2m for description of each one
- Define (1) Cardiovascular Endurance
(2) Strength
(3) VO2 Max
(4) Steady State
(5) Lactate Threshold
(15 marks)
Marking scheme: 3m for each correct definition
- Mary did the Treadmill Jogging Test. Her results are as follows:
SM1 = 30.1
SM2 = 35.7
HR1 = 136
HR2 = 145
Using the formula below and given that Mary is 35years oldestimate Marys VO2 Max.
B = SM2 – SM1
HR2 - HR1
VO2 Max = SM2 + b(HR Max – HR2)
(15 marks)
Marking scheme: 5m for correct calculation of b, 10m for correct calculation of VO2Max. Lesser marks may be given if the process is correct but the calculation of figures incorrect
- Describe 5 health related benefits of improved
- Body Composition
- Flexibility
- Cardiovascular endurance (15 Marks)
Marking scheme: 1m per benefit to a max of 5m for each component
- John weighs 75kg and is 1.75m tall, work out his BMI using the following formula;
BMI = Weight in Kgs / Height in m2
(BMI = weight in kilos divided by height in metres squared)
(10 marks)
Marking scheme: 10m for correct answer, lesser marks if process is correct but calculation incorrect
- Simon aged 47 completed the Rockport Walk Test in 13 minutes, he weighs 150 lbs and his recorded heart rate on completion of the walk was 155. Use the generalised equation below to calculate his VO2 Max.
VO2 Max = 132.853 – 0.0769(Body Weight in lbs) - 0.3877(age) + 6.315(gender*) -3.264(time) - 0.1565(HR bpm)
(*gender = Male = 1, Female = 0)
(15 marks)
Marking scheme: 15m for correct calculation, lesser marks if process is correct but final calculation incorrect
12. Mark has completed the Treadmill Walking Test. His speed for the duration of the test was 3 mph and his heart rate on completion was 140 BPM. Mark is aged 47.
Use the formula below to calculate Mark’s VO2 Max in ml.kg-1.min-1
VO2max (ml.kg-1.min-1) = 15.1 + 21.8(speed mph) - 0.327(HR bpm) - 0.263(speed x age yr) + 0.00504(HR x age) + 5.48(gender).
For gender female = 0, male =1
(15 marks)
13.
When testing for Cardiovascular Fitness, tests can be graded as
“Maximal” or “Sub-Maximal”, outline three key differences in
such tests and give an example test from each category. (15 Marks)
Marking scheme: 3 for each key difference (max 9) and 3 marks for each example (max 6)
