Portfolio
Instructor: Chris Conley
What is a portfolio?
An opportunity to learn more and reflect
A tool to self-assess and judge your learning
An indication of your successes, advancements, and improvements needed
A deeper look at what you learned in class
It is not—An unorganized folder of all completed assignments and handouts.
Why?
In order to get a deeper understanding on your learning
To be accountable; show your progress
To reflect on your work and learning
To find your strengths and weaknesses
To set new goals
What you need:
- Small folder with attachments (not a 3 ring binder)
- Cover page
- Index with page numbers or organizational system
- Introduction writing
- Paragraphs of Learning
- Documents of Support
- No Plastic Sheets
Three Critical Parts:
1.Introduction
The introduction is a paragraph explaining 1) What you learned in class this quarter, 2) what you learned or noticed making the portfolio, 3) What you need to do/improve next.
2.Paragraphs of Learning
These are paragraphs that you need to write that explain how you worked on or completed a competency (listed below). In other words, it tells the reader how you worked on skills and what you learned with the document. It may even give your struggle to learn it or if you want to work harder in this area. There are 2 questions to answer in each paragraph:
a) How did you learn this skill in class? What did you do? What was the process?
b)Why did you choose this document to demonstrate your ability in this skill?
3.Documents of Support
These are your papers and homework in your folder that you created or completed in class. They are evidence of your learning or advancement. They will demonstrate your skills. They are explained in your Paragraph of Learning.
Competencies
Competencies are skills that you are able to do. For each competency or skill below, you need to write one Paragraph of Learning and enter Documents of Support. Find materials in your folder that show or demonstrate your learning in these areas. You can say that documents helped you to complete learning (goals) or helped you to advance your learning.
