Sankofa in an Akan work meaning, “one must return to the past in order to move
forward”. This work is inspired by Julius Lester’s book “to Be A Slave” that reflects the
personal narratives of the slave experience for African-Americans. This work is
dedicated to the history of my people, that educates me on where I’ve been, who I am and
where I’m going and it is because of them that I am and will always be free!!!!!!!
Godspeed your souls.

"Jam on the Rhythm" is a collaboration of many talented groups from the Phoenix area. Foot Klan Dance Co. trains some of the best dancers and martial artists in the world, as well as being leaders in the creation of many innovative movements in Hip-Hop.
Street Jam has stormed the valley by drumming on everything, and Batukuda leader Porangui McGrew and Rob James from the rock bands Mr. Hyde and Anthem (mrhydemusic.com) have joined together to jam on the rhythm. Special thanks to Orna Tsabary Titchnell, Cari Koch, Mark Ammerman, Bill Swayze and especially Pegge Vissicaro for making this possible.
Biographies
Monique I. Jones began her dance training as a classical ballerina in her native home of Kansas City, Missouri at the Kansas City Middle School of the Arts (KCMSA). Jones later attended Paseo Academy of Visual and Performing Arts high school, where she received her “Arts Certificate” in dance. While in high school, she studied dance under Tony Award winning choreographer Lenny Williams and was awarded numerous scholarships including a scholarship to the Gus Giordano dance in Illinois, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York. She later attended the University of Iowa, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Dance and Journalism. Jones has taught in guest residencies with Tempe Dance Academy, Xavier College Preparatory, Student Leadership Enrichment Academy, Mesa Fine Arts, and the African-American Christian Training School (AACTS). Jones’s choreography has been featured at various venues throughout Arizona including the Scottsdale Community College (SCC) Trifusions Concert, the 2002 Scottsdale Get-Out Expo for the Arts as-well as the 2003 4th Annual Celebration of Dance in Phoenix. She has been an honored recipient for the USA Access to Education Scholarship, FIBCO Family Services Annual Inner-City Education Fellowship and recently was featured in the 2004-2005 issue of “The Chancellor’s List” for her outstanding community service and academic achievement during her graduate studies in Arizona. Currently pursuing her Masters in Fine Arts of Dance/Choreography at ASU, Jones has enjoyed teaching professionally in the community as-well as teaching Jazz in the ASU dance department and currently teaches Jazz at the Scottsdale Dance Academy. Continuing her passion in the exploration of dance movement, Jones inspires to work in inner-city communities, education all on the history and influences of African-American’s in concert dance.
First, I want to thank God for being the source of every mercy and the one who so wonderfully comforts and strengthens me in my hardships and trials. To my mother Patsy, brother Antoinne and fiancé Wrennie for their continual love and encouragement. To my dancers for their inspiration and dedication. And to my awesome committee: Professor Pegge Vissicaro, Professor Naomi Jackson and Professor Shouze Ma for their ideas and support throughout the entirety of this project.
Darryl Khalid, choreographer and director. It takes a strong, talented leader to manage and direct the efforts of this energetic dance machine known as the Foot Klan. Darryl Khalid currently holds the title of Mr. Soul Train and has studied the old school Hip Hop dance styles since the age of six. He is currently the “Philosophy of Hip Hop” professor for the Maricopa Community College District in Phoenix. Darryl is also a world-renown seven-time World champion fighter, dance performer, and professional choreographer.
Erica Nielsen, originally from Wisconsin, has been an active modern dance choreographer and performer at ASU, but finds her greatest passion in dance
research and teaching. She studied International Studies and Cultural
Anthropology as an undergraduate at Macalester College (St. Paul, MN), and
received minors in Dance and French. She came to ASU's Department of Dance
with the intention of studying choreography, but then met Dr. Pegge Vissicaro
and discovered Dance Ethnology, a field which combines Dance and
Anthropology. Erica has taught four semesters of dance ethnology courses to
ASU undergraduates, and wants to continue teaching in the future. She plans
to pursue a PhD in Anthropology in fall 2006, and to eventually work as a
faculty member in a Department of Dance. She would like to thank Pegge
Vissicaro, Naomi Jackson, Karen Schupp, Mary Fitzgerald, and Becky Dyer for
their kindness and support, especially their involvement in her thesis work
and PhD application process. Finally, Erica thanks her Wisconsin family for
their love and support, and her Bulgarian family for going out of their way
for her project. The piece "Bulgarian Travelogue" is based on two periods of
intensive fieldwork in Bulgaria, conducted in summer 2004 and winter 2005-
2006. Erica's research and choreography was supported by ASU Department of Dance, from which she received two Hope Heimann Fellowships, as well as the Herberger College of Fine Arts and the Graduate College.
David Titchnellwas born in Los Angeles, CA, where he was a child actor working in motion pictures and commercials, including Disney's "Pete's Dragon". He also sang and danced on cruise ships, performed with Milton Berle and went on national and international tours with his mother's dance company the "American Folk Ballet", all before he graduated Harvard-Westlake High School. After receiving his BFA from NYU, where he was a Seidman Scholarship recipient, David choreographed the movie "Slam Dance" with Tom Hulce (Amadeus) and Adam Ant, performed with many dance companies including Partridge/Benford Dance/Music (Lincoln Center Touring Program) and the Ohad Naharin Dance Company. He also choreographed his own work in Dance Theatre Workshops "Fresh Tracks", PS 122 and many other off-off Broadway venues.
David then moved to Tel-Aviv, Israel, after being invited by Ohad to join Batsheva Dance Company. While in Batsheva, David toured Europe often and worked with Jiri Killian (NDT), William Forsythe (Frankfurt Ballet), Mark Morris, Angela Preljocaj, Elizabeth Streb and many others.
While in Israel, David worked for the Ministry of Arts and Education, performing his own shows all over the country and won the Nir David arts education award.
He also converted the first factory in Tel-Aviv into a hip performance space and gallery, where he created many more productions.
After moving back to Los Angeles, David performed in shows for Universal Studios (the theme park and special events) and started choreographing and performing in customized corporate shows, of which he has done hundreds. He has also starred in many TV commercials, including Amazon.com, Dr. Pepper, Hyundai, Toyota, and recently five for Goodyear. Last year David choreographed one of the biggest events ever done in South America. Designed by Oscar winner Eugenio Zanetti and directed by Emmy winner Daniel Flannery, this 40-minute show, which toured Colombia, had a cast of 500 and was performed for over a 100,000 people every night.
Since moving to AZ, four years ago, David is a few credits shy of his MFA at ASU, and is the founder and director of Street Jam, a "stomp" style global percussion and dance band, that does corporate, community and educational shows all over the state and the country. The Street Jam school program does residencies all over Phoenix and is partners with the 21st Century Grant Program, the Phoenix Symphony, AZ Jewish Theatre and the Phoenix Theatre.
