3. RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Outline project in labelled paragraphs
Maximum 2 pages including figures!!
Use numbered references (in order of use).
Proposal should be written for a well-informed non-specialist
BACKGROUND:
Scientific background. This should make it clear why this project is interesting
PROJECT AIMS: State as clear research questions
RESEARCH DESIGN/METHODS: If sampling, outline what samples will be collected, how many, and where from. It needs to be clear how your sampling design or research methods will answer the questions you posed in the section above
PUBLICATIONS: Give provisional titles ofscientific publications plannedto result from the project
BUDGET: Outline:
- Howwill proposed budget will allow the aims to be met;
- Why project needs the proposed number of samples;
- Why project needs theproposed rangeof measurement or samples.
OTHER FUNDING SOURCES OR SUPPORT:
Outline any other funding sources that are currently available or that will be applied for. Include contributions from other organisations, whether in money, equipment, vessels or staff time
ADDTIONAL NOTES: e.g.explanatory notes, constraints on logistics, budget etc.
4. REFERENCES -Limit:one page
Fieldwork, travel, laboratory and analytical requirements notes etc. and unaltered signature box must fit on two pages
5. VESSEL FIELD WORK- OVERVIEW
Vessel and destination / Number of trips / Timing / Purposee.g. Polaris: Southland Front] / 2 / Sept. 2012 / Hydrographic cross-section of front [1]
Add/delete rows as required
Notes on Vessels:
- Boats are charged by the engine hour, at rates shown on the spreadsheet. You need to figure out how many engine hours you need to complete the planned tasks.
list any other relevant information e.g.
- Any constraints (e.g. must be in spring)
- Any other students/staff who could share vessel and cost
- List of any additional people/staff/ organisations involved (apart from vessel crew)
- Essential equipment required, e.g. Sea Bird CTD with fluorometer, plankton net
- Willthe working day be more than eight hours long?
- Use numbered notes if required, e.g. [1] requires Seabird CTD with 500m-depth rating.
6. OTHER FIELD WORK/TRAVEL- OVERVIEW
Destination / Mode / Number of trips / Timing / Purposee.g. Papanui Inlet / Private car / 2 / Oct/Nov 2012 / Intertidal sampling [1]
Add/delete rows as required
Mode of transport =Car, Van, Utility, Plane,Feet, etc.
Notes on Field Work/Travel: [list any other relevant information e.g.
- Any constraints, e.g. must be in spring
- Use private vehicles if possible. These are budgeted at 20c/km
- Any other students/staff who could share transportation and cost
- List of any additional people/staff/ organisations involved
- Essential equipments required, e.g. Seabird CTD with fluorometer
- Will the working day be more than eight hours long?
- Use numbered notes if required, e.g. [1] requires hand held salinometer.
7. MAJOR LABORATORY, ANALYTICAL ANDTECHNICAL SUPPORT REQUIREMENTS - OVERVIEW
Requirement, / Equipment/Person required / Timing / Purposee.g. PML sediments lab / Particle Counter / Oct/Nov 2012 / Assess frequency of sediment grain sizes
e.g HPLC / plankton photosynthetic pigment analysis[1]
e.g. Software Development / Daryl / modify “dots on rocks program” to log bryozoans
Notes on Laboratory, analytical and support requirements: list any other relevant information e.g. Any constraints on timing or sharing of lab use;
Use numbered notes if required, e.g.“[1] requires a new column for a specific carotenoid”

Note for supervisors
You must agree to take responsibility for costs that go beyond the student allocation; do not agree to supervise students on expensive projects unless you have alternative funding.
Notes on application and worksheet (do not submit thispagewith your application)
The intent of this application form and spreadsheet is to provide an overview of the
research, its aims, outcomes, practical requirements and costs in a concise form which
enables the department to decide on funding.
The indirect costs of technical support and vessels are included in the proposal to show the
full cost of the research. The department funds the indirect costs of salaries and vessels.
The department will approve a sum towards the direct costs of travel and consumables, etc.
within reason and if justified in the proposal. In addition, the department may allocate a
number of vessel hours and technical support hours to the project to cover the indirect
costs.
The budget must include the whole cost even if asking only for a small part of the total cost.
Notes on Budget Work Sheet
- Maximum allocation for direct costs is $1,500 per full-time student per year.
- Capital equipment will not be funded, only what is consumed by the project.
- No personal gear (e.g. wetsuits) can be included, nor travel to conferences.
- Enter costs of consumables, travel etc without GST. When getting quotes check if 15% GST has been included, if so deduct it before entering costs into sheet.
- Thedepartment will reimburse fuel use of student cars (with receipts) but will not fund "mileage"of student vehicles.
