Prepare and “Show What You Know”
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.8.1.a
Come to discussions prepared, having read or researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence on the topic, text, or issue to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion.
/5 / You may not have taken proper notes during the preparation period. It seems like you aren’t sure of “what you know” and need more time to think or re-read. You may not share enough for me to determine what you know. / You are prepared, and use the notes you have created to add to the conversation. You are able to contribute to what is being said with evidence AND raise questions of your own. It is clear that you know that topic and contribute appropriately. / You are a leader within the conversation, using evidence that you have prepared to make interesting points, draw others in to the conversation, and are able to reflect on ideas presented to point out connections or misconceptions.
LOUD AND CLEAR
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.8.4
Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with relevant evidence, sound valid reasoning, and well-chosen details; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
/5 / You mumble, cover your mouth, or simply don’t speak loudly enough for people outside of the fishbowl to hear you. Sometimes people you are talking to can’t hear you. You are not making eye contact with the group members. / You are heard and understood by everyone outside the fishbowl nearly all time. There may be up to 3 instances where you need to be louder or clearer. You have good eye contact with your group, only looking at me once or twice. / You are heard and understood by everyone outside the fishbowl all the time. You look at the person you are responding to, as well as project your voice. You do not look at me, but instead use body language to convey interest.
CONVERSING
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.8.1.d
Acknowledge new information expressed by others, and, when warranted, qualify or justify their own views in light of the evidence presented.
/5 / You don’t talk to the group, but you might read something you have written down. You are not listening to the other members of the group. The comments are not connected to what is being said. / You are a good conversationalist. You are listening to and responding to those in the group. You state your opinions and are comfortable discussing this topic. / You are an excellent conversationalist, even going so far as to pull others who are quiet in to the discussion. You are confident in your answers, but are great at synthesizing new information.
