JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:Senior Physicist

Equivalent to an NHS post in the upper part of Band 7

HOURS:37.5 per week

(Clinical commitments may require some early morning and evening working with very occasionally weekend working)

LOCATION:Cancer Centre London, Parkside, Wimbledon

RESPONSIBLE TO:Head of Physics

SALARY:Negotiable

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

As Parkside is a small site the post holder will be expected to take part in all aspects of Physics activities within the centre.

  1. To participate in ensuring that Parkside Physics provides a high quality service for Cancer Centre London in treatment planning (including IMRT), dosimetry, equipment quality assurance and radiation safety
  1. To participate in the provision of professional scientific advice and expertise in the field of Radiotherapy Physics to clinicians and other health care professions.
  1. To participate in ensuring that the department meets all its legal and statutory requirements and that equipment is regularly checked in accordance with professional protocols and codes of practice.
  1. To take a leading role for radiotherapy input with the record and verify system and related network.
  1. To take a leading role in maintaining invivo dosimetry systems.
  1. To participate in the commissioning of new equipment within target dates.
  1. To participate in the implementation and ongoing operation of new procedures, e.g.Monte Carlo treatment planning, Adaptive Radiotherapy, Gating, etc.
  1. To participate in a rota for the routine activities of the department, i.e. planning, plan checking, linac run-up & QA, IMRT QA, nuclear medicine QA, radiation protection, etc.
  1. To participate in the Definitive Calibration of equipment.
  1. To participate in the maintenance and operation of the quality system.
  1. To assistwith development of services provided by Physics, primarily to radiotherapy.
  1. To keep abreast with Scientific and Technical developments in medical radiation Physics.
  1. To undertake other duties delegated by the Head of Physics.
  1. To Comply with Heath and safety at work regulations.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • Health Professions Council Registered Clinical Scientist.
  • A minimum of four years experience in Radiotherapy Physics
  • Good Honours Degree or Equivalent
  • Ability to work in sensitive patient areas with tact, maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Have the ability to solve problems where they do occur, either alone or with the help of other members of the team.
  • Candidates who do not have English as a first language should provide evidence of achievement of IELTS Level 7 or higher(or an equivalent score in a recognised test)

Desirable

  • Additional Qualifications e.g. MSc, PhD, IPEM training.
  • Completion of IPEM PAT scheme
  • Suitable for appointment as an MPE
  • Some experience of commissioning linacs, treatment planning systems and other equipment
  • Some experience of developing techniques in radiotherapy, e.g. Monte Carlo treatment planning, Adaptive Radiotherapy, Gating, etc.
  • Some experience in another field(s) of medical radiation physics e.g.nuclear medicine, CT, MRI or radiation safety.
