Dear Dr Dryden

FoI ref 220926 - Pressure Filters at the Royal Commonwealth Pool

Thank you for your Request for Information received at start of business on 16 February 2011. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding.

Your request has been answered in accordance with the Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004. Please find below answers to the questions that you posed:

Q1. Can you explain why a decision to use uncertified, unregulated waste crushed glass is going to be used in the pressure filters for the new Commonwealth Pool.

Response:

Eco Glass Filter Media (EGFM) is not crushed glass. It is produced by a British patented process that ensures the product is never sharp.EGFM is produced in accordance with BS EN 12904:2005 particle size distribution. An audit is carried out by the Environment Agency to ensure that no unsuitable glass is in the feedstock.

Q2. Can you also explain why a company that has never constructed pressure filters has been selected to provide the filters for the pool.

Response:

The main contractoris content that their subcontractor and supply chain are suitably experienced in the design and installation of all aspects of the filtration system.

Q3. Have you conducted a risk analysis of the installation in the event of a catastrophic failure of a filter resulting in the discharge of ground glass into the pool?

Response:

System design reviewsof the filtration design have been carried out throughout the design process.

Q4. Why is the pool not being constructed in compliance to the tender documents?

Response:

The pool is being constructed in accordance with the tender documentation.
