Basic Operating Instructions for the Nook

Turning the Nook On and Off.

· On the left side of the Nook is a narrow button. To turn it on, press the button once. Please be patient as it takes a few moments for the Nook’s operating system to load. The Nook is controlled from the narrow touchscreen at the bottom (the gray section above is for reading only and has no touchscreen capabilities).

· Slide the unlock icon to the right to wake up the Nook.

· The Nook will deactivate itself to save power after 20 minutes if you leave it inactive. The Nook is in "power saving mode" when you see an image on the screen (either an image of a famous writer, a cityscape or a nature scene).

· If you want to turn the Nook off, hold down the button located at the left side of the Nook until the screen goes blank. This turns off the device.

· The touchscreen of the Nook deactivates after 60 seconds. To reactivate it, tap it once.

Complete user guide for the Nook

· A user guide to the Nook can be found in the Books section of the library (it came pre-installed with the Nook). You can find it on B&N’s web site by clicking herehttp://images.barnesandnoble.com/pimages/nook/download/User_Guide_NOOK_v1_4.pdf

Charging the Nook

· The Nook comes with a power cord/USB adapter. Remove the square piece at the end to make use of the USB connection. You know the Nook is charging when the yellow light on the bottom of the Nook illuminates.

Brighten the Nook’s screen

· The Nook’s brightness adjusts automatically. If you wish to increase the screen brightness, tap on Settings, then Display, then tap on Touchscreen brightness. Adjust the slider accordingly to your desired level of brightness.

Please Note: The higher the brightness the faster the battery will become exhausted.

Adjusting the Sound on the Nook

· On the upper right corner of the Nook are two buttons labeled plus and minus. To increase the sounds on the Nook push the plus button. To lower the sounds on the Nook push the minus button.

PDF and Personal files to the Nook

· You can load pdf’s and other files onto the Nook using the USB cable that came with the Nook. Connect the Nook to your PC and drag the files you want on the Nook into my documents folder. You can also add mp3’s and other digital content in order to listen to music while you are reading – drag those to the appropriately named folders.

· Non-Nook documents may not display correctly – please keep this in mind when adding pdf’s and pdf scans.

· Remember that any files you place on the Nook will be visible to other patrons unless you delete them before returning the Nook.
