Leadership Development Semester III, Gilbert
Instructions for Team Performance Analysis and Action Plan for Improvement (20 points)
This is an individual, three page assignment with an appendix as needed. Your title page does not count as one of the three pages nor do the pages you include in the appendix to your paper.
Task: You are to analyze the performance of a team at work. It may be a team you lead or one in which you are a member. If you are not employed, then you may use your ELT or any other team in which you are associated—including the board of your homeowners association, church, synagogue, professional association, or the like. The team must have a purpose and interact together to accomplish it—it is not a group. The more meaningful the team is to you, the better.
Assessment method:To provide a standard framework for this assignment, you are asked to use the TEAM-P assessment tool that is provided by the professor. The tool consists of five major characteristics that define the effective performance of a team. They are:
- Targeting Performance: Clear goals, member commitment to the goals, and milestones to accomplish them.
- Expectations of Members: Members understand what is expected of the team by its customers, team member roles are clearly understood, and role expectations are clarified with every team undertaking).
- Accountability: The team effectively deals with individual and group problems, it seeks assistance from external resources as needed, it addresses internal issues effectively.
- Membership: Team members support one another, they have a high sense of loyalty and pride, each feels respected and valued from others on the team.
- Performance: Team decision making is effective, team morale is high, the talents of all the members of the team are used effectively.
Overall Performance: The degree to which the team is performing effectively.
Method: Select one or more teams to analyze. Use the TEAM-P assessment tool and have each member of the team (s) complete it anonymously about the team in which they belong. Tally the results. Identify the relative effectiveness of the team using the TEAM-P criteria. You may add criteria to the assessment, as well, if you deem it essential. Next write a summary of the performance of the team based on the data derived.
Analysis: Prepare an overall assessment of the team’s effectiveness. Identify its strengths and areas in which there are opportunities for improvement.
Leadership Interventions: Specify the interventions you would take, step by step to enable the team to improve its performance. With each step, please provide a topical outline of what you would do. Cite references from class literature (including from other course material beyond the leadership seminar in Seminar III).
In the appendix of your paper, please include the ratings from the TEAM-P assessment to include frequencies and means for each of the 16 variables in the assessment.
