President Jeff DeMarre called the Regular January 9, 2008, meeting of the Board of Directors of Sumner School District No. 320 to order at 6:02 PM.

Approval of Agenda
Moved by Sherm Voiles that the Board approve the agenda and supplemental agenda as presented. Mike Pavlik seconded. Motion unanimously carried.
Board Reorganization: Election & Seating of Officers
As per Board policy, a president, vice president, legislative representative, and alternate legislative representative need to elected for the 2008 term of office. President Jeff DeMarre opened the floor for nominations.
Moved by Sherm Voiles that Greg Hanon be elected as president, Mike Pavlik as vice president, Rick Hendricks as legislative representative, and Greg Hanon as alternate legislative representative. Mike Pavlik seconded. Motion unanimously carried.
Greg Hanon thanked Jeff DeMarre for his two years of service as Board President and presented him with a personalized gavel.
Approval of Minutes
Moved by Sherm Voiles that the Board approve the minutes of the Regular December 12 Board meeting as presented. Mike Pavlik seconded. Motion unanimously carried.

Moved by Mike Pavlik that the Board approve the consent items on the regular and supplemental agendas. Sherm Voiles seconded. Motion unanimously carried.

Community Recreation Agreement
The Board approved renewal of the Community Recreation Program Interlocal Agreement between the City of Bonney Lake, The City of Sumner and the Sumner School District for 2008.
Surplus Property
The Board authorized the District to surplus items on the District Surplus Removal Listing.
Out of State Travel

Recognition
a. Roll of Honor
Board President Greg Hanon recognized accomplishments, achievements and awards fall student athletics and coaches. A summary is attached.
b.School Board Recognition
January is School Board Recognition Month in the state of Washington. This coincides with a nationwide effort to honor and underscore the important role of elected school board members in public education and student achievement. Sumner High School ASB President Steven Riley thanked the Board for their service on behalf of students in the District. Superintendent Gil Mendoza presented Board members with certificates of appreciation. Board members were also honored with books that will be presented to our Sumner High School International Baccalaureate library in recognition of their many years of service to students and families.

a.Sumner Middle School
Co-Principal Steve Sjolund introduced teachers Char Vassey and Stacey Whitney who highlighted the Honor Society and Running Club at Sumner Middle School. Char introduced Honor Society members Megan Cihak and John Sellars who spoke about the society’s learning activities and community philanthropy. Stacey introduced Running Club members Blair Libbyand Stephanie Josten who told the Board they enjoyed the club because it’s non-competitive and offers a flexible schedule. Stacey and fellow staff member Kay Thomsen, Psychologist, started the Running Club in the fall.

b. Capital Projects Timeline
Assistant Superintendent Craig Spencer reviewed the master planning schedule for the District’s six capital facilities projects, three of which are underway. The District is currently working on the planning and pre-design of Lakeridge Middle School, the modernization of Victor Falls Elementary and HVAC replacement at Sumner High School.

c.Professional Development Specialists
“Even the best performers have coaches to gain higher levels of performance and produce greater results,” said Erin LaVerdiere, Professional Development Director. The District’s 13 building- based Professional Development Specialists produce long-term improvement at each of our schools. Professional Development Specialists (PDS) Leslie Lauretano and Loren Willson spoke about how a PDS facilitates data use in their building and how the Professional Development program helps recruit and retain teaching staff. Teachers Amy Spencer and John Norlin, and Co- Principal Kent Vallier detailed the benefits of having a PDS in their buildings.
d.Class of 2008
Exectutive Director Teaching & Learning Chris Wick outlined the goals of the State’s graduation requirements and the four steps required for graduation: culminating senior project, high school & beyond plan, credit requirements and WASL standards. Assistant Superintendent Betsy Minor Reid stated that the class of 2008 is the first class required to meet WASL standards but that credit deficiency remains the biggest obstacle for graduation.

Mike Pavlik moved that the Board adopt revised Policy 2160: Special Education and Related Services for Eligible Students. Jeff DeMarre seconded. Motion unanimously carried.
b.Instructional Materials Adoption – Second Reading
Moved by Jeff DeMarre that the Board adopt the following instructional materials for use in the Sumner School District. Sherm Voiles seconded. Motion unanimously carried.
