Methodology
Results in this report are based upon questions asked in the UMR Research nation-wide omnibus survey. This is a telephone survey of a nationally representative sample of 750 New Zealanders 18 years of age and over.
Fieldwork was conducted from 10h to 15th February 2006 at UMR Research’s national interview facility in Auckland.
The margin of error for a 50% figure at the ‘95% confidence level’ is ± 3.6%.
In some tables numbers may not add to 100%, due to rounding.
Summary of Key Findings
Asians were, as in the 2001, 2003 and 2004 surveys, the people most likely to be seen as being discriminated against.
In unprompted questioning on a first mention basis, 16% identified Asians, followed by European New Zealanders (9%), Māori (6%), recent immigrants (6%) and Muslims (4%) as the group most likely to be discriminated against in New Zealand today.
The order was similar in the previous 2004 study but the level of nomination of Asians lower. In 2004, 26% identified Asians followed by 14% European New Zealanders, 7% Māori, 5% recent immigrants and 4% ethnic minorities in general.
There were more unprompted mentions of discrimination relating to income levels including middle and higher incomes in this year’s survey. The proportion mentioning religion also increased from 0.3% to 4.7%.
In prompted questioning, Asians also topped the list of those most likely to be identified as being discriminated against.
72% of New Zealanders surveyed considered that Asians were subject to a great deal or some discrimination. This was down on the 2004 number (78%).
70% thought recent immigrants were subject to a great deal or some discrimination; similar to the 2004 figure (72%).
63% thought refugees were subject to a great deal or some discrimination. This was down on the 2004 figure (70%).
The general level of perceived discrimination for most groups was either down a little or stable. The biggest movement was a 9% drop in the perceived level of discrimination (great and some) for people who are overweight.
Men were included in the groups tested in the prompted question for the first time. 30% thought there was a great deal or some discrimination towards men and 67% that there was only a little or none at all.
The equivalent figures for women were 38%;59%. On the unprompted open-ended question on first mention, respondents were more likely to mention men (2.5%) than women (0.5%).
34% of men thought there was a great deal or some discrimination against themselves. 25% of women thought there was a great deal or some discrimination against men.
45% of women thought there was a great deal or some discrimination against them whereas 32% of men thought there was a great deal or some discrimination against women.
There was also a division of opinion on whether there was discrimination against Māori by ethnicity. 71% of Māori thought there was a great deal or some discrimination against Māori compared to 49% of non-Māori. Some care is needed given the smaller Māori sub-sample (n=82).
Older New Zealanders were only a little more likely than other groups to believe there was discrimination against their age cohort. 48% of New Zealanders 60 years plus thought there was a great deal or some discrimination against older people compared to 44% for all New Zealanders.
