SUBJECT: SPU Technician II - Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
The SPU Technician II is an expert in the SPU setting. They are directly responsible to the Surgical Services Nurse Manager, and/or the Operating Room (OR) RN to plan, organize, and carry out activities in the Sterile Processing Unit (SPU) and perform in work environment under varied routine and/or emergency situations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Supervisory position who works in coordination with the Surgical Services/SPU Manager.
· Leads and guides sterile processing staff in the reprocessing of instrumentation and equipment.
· Participates in the scheduling, staffing, and annual evaluations of the SPU department, in
coordination with the Surgical Services Manager.
· Participates in orientation and ongoing training of sterile processing staff
· Operates washers, sterilizers, ultrasonic machines, steam autoclaves, heat sealers, and additional
equipment during sterilization procedures.
· Adheres to AORN, and AAMI guidelines (e.g. biological, chemical and mechanical monitoring) in the
performance of duties.
· Performs necessary duties to maintain a contaminant-free work environment
· Assists in ordering, stocking and maintaining department inventory levels.
· Participates in SPU call rotation.
· Performs decontamination and sterilization of instruments, supplies, and equipment for clinical units
· Operates and maintains log books of steam sterilizers, ethylene oxide sterilizer, washer-sterilizer and
ultrasonic cleaner
· Assists in development of sterile processing policies and procedures ultrasonic cleaner
· May be required to assist with the cleaning and preparation of operating room suites as needed
· Responsible for maintaining a sense of personal commitment and service in workplace
· Participates in staff development and teaching personnel
· Maintains confidentiality of all patient information(HIPAA), staff and hospital business

scheduled. Maintaining regular attendance and punctuality is a required Essential Function of this

à High school graduate or acceptable equivalent
à Sterile processing certification (CRCST or CSPD), required.
· Experience:
à Two (2) years experience in sterile processing environment
· Supervised by:
à Surgical Services Nurse Manager, and/or the Operating Room (OR) RN
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Job allows employee to vary physical position or activity for comfort
· Ability to lift/carry 25 pounds, required. Manual dexterity, ability to stand, bend, lift and/or reach for extended periods of time, required.
· In a normal work day, may be required to stand and/or walk for eight (8) hours or longer
