momentum & impulse problems
Objective
- Solve problems regarding momentum and impulse.
Directions
Complete these on a separate sheet of paper, box and highlight all calculations! Remember, for full credit on ALL problems, you must DiTEST!
1)A 110 kg running back is running the ball towards the endzone at 6.5 m/s. He hits a linebacker, who brings the running back to a stop in 0.6 s. What force does the linebacker exert on the running back?
2)Ms. Hall, m=53 kg, is cruising down the street in her Honda at 15 m/s (this is about 35 mph) and hits a brick wall.
a)In one scenario, the airbag does not deploy. Ms. Hall hits the steering wheel with an impact time of 0.08 s. Calculate the stopping force she experiences.
b)In another scenario, the airbag DOES deploy. Ms. Hall hits the airbag with an impact time of 0.75 s. Calculate the stopping force she experiences.
c)NOW explain why airbags hurt less than steering wheels! Use the words impulse, change in momentum, force, and time in your answer!
3)Tricky!A 0.144 kg baseball approaches a batter with a speed of 30 m/sec. The batter lines the ball directly back to the pitcher with a speed of 40 m/sec. Find the change in momentum of the ball and the impulse exerted on the ball. If the bat and ball were in contact for 0.012 sec, find the average force exerted on the ball by the bat during this period.
