Library Lesson –by Anne-Marie Tarter, librarian at Ripon Grammar School.
Aim:
· Compare different kinds of information resources (and strategies to use for each)
· Raise awareness of issue of plagiarism and the use of bibliographies
Needed:
· Questions on slips of paper (question and resource to use)
· Recording sheet (include bibliographic info)
· Pre-selected books and websites
· Oliver ready (the library’s automated catalogue)
· Whiteboard and pens
· Homework sheet
Set: (10 minutes)
Students are put into pairs and each pair is given a question on a slip to answer. One person searches and the other person records the process. (Each slip identifies both the question and the resource to be used)
INPUT/MODEL (10 mins)
· Discuss strategies used.
· Importance of knowing HOW to use a resource – can make a difference as to how long and how successful you are at finding the answer
· Those of you who could ask for help – does that make things easier?
· To find information successfully – it is important to have a range of strategies and to always ask for help when you are stuck!
SET: (5 mins)
· Put your names on the top of the form if haven’t already
· Exchange with someone else
· New pair – cross off the names at the top and write in yours instead and then hand it in as yours
· What is wrong with this?
INPUT/ MODEL (5 mins)
· When you use information that is not your own idea, and you don’t name the source, it is known as PLAGIARISM
o It is a form of stealing…you are stealing someone else’s ideas
· What can you do? You always include a BIBLIOGRAPHY with any work you hand in that required you to use someone else’s information – give credit to those who helped you!
· Just like on the question sheet
· Author, title, publisher, date of publication, pages used
· Website: name, who is responsible, last updated
· Interview a person: name of person, position, date of interview
HOMEWORK: (HAND OUT SHEET) – 5 MINS
· Next week is National Anti-Bullying Week. In next week’s lesson you are going to make posters to put up around school outlining 5 Things to do to stop bullying
· For your homework I want you to collect some ideas that you thing would be useful to help you. You can use the Internet or the group of books that we used this morning. You may have things at home that could help. You might want to ask people, like your parents or your teachers for ideas. You can ‘cut and paste’ it from the Internet, write it up in your words or photocopy it from a book BUT YOU MUST come with a bibliography telling me where you found your information,
· Next week we will share ideas that you found and talk about the strategies you used to find your information,
PLENARY:
· Why do you think I ask you to write down the new ideas in your own words?
· Why do I ask you for your own ideas as well?
Both ways mean that you are more likely to question what you read, and try to make sense out of it….
· Do you agree with what you read?
· Do you have experiences, ideas of your own that you can add to what you have found out?
This means your brain is WORKING with the new information….and this is a whole new way of reading! It’s like having a discussion with the author! We will talk more this year about reading this way and how it can help you with all of your school work!
