Course Overview

This course has been designed to give you a brief glimpse at the world that you will inherit. I hope that you will take with you a greater sense of ownership and responsibility. I want you to understand that your decisions (or lack of) do impact the planet and with very little effort now, you will have a cleaner and safer place to call home. We will spend a lot of time discussing current trends, showing how real science is used to understand, monitor, and improve our environment, and understanding how little changes can cause change – good or bad

Materials

  • You will be required to have paper and a binder or folder (we will discuss options), and writing utensils
  • Be able to access data easily (USB). You will also need computer access. It is helpful to have access to a camera or phone with camera and an email address

Grading: Grading Scale On-Line (See Website – Course Outline).

Grades will be updated regularly and posted in the classroom using your id numbers or on Skyward. Your grade will be based on total points earned with each assignment being placed into one of the areas below:Points May Vary

- Notebook Checks (Daily work - warm-ups, notes, worksheets, etc), (~200 pts)

-Participation (Active Discussion, timely hand-in/completion, work w/others) (100pts)

- Labs and Projects - (lab experiences, individual and group) (~300 pts)

- Service Learning/Environmental Awareness Experience

- Water Testing/Aquatic invertebrate sampling

- Recycling

- Tests and Quizzes (announced or unannounced) (350 pts)

- Final Exam(150 pts) – 20%

Course Requirements

Notebook: You will be copying many assignments, warm-ups, and some notes into your notebook ,it will be collected

Homework: Homework will be given on an as needed basis. Check folder and/or website if absent to get missed work

Labs: Laboratory activities will provide you with an alternative hands-on method to understanding topics covered in class

Projects: Several Major projects will be assigned during the course of the semester. Each will require time outside of class to successfully complete. You will also need computer/Internet access for most projects

Out of Class Experience: You will be required to participate in ONE out of the classroom experience, not including recycling. This may be participation is highway clean up, river testing/clean up, attending local meeting, visiting a nature center and reporting on it. Other ideas will be presented.Parent Initial ______

Recycling: This class runs the recycling program for the high school and you will be required to collect, package, weigh and neatly place in proper place. You may not do this until the end of the year (see sign up). A paper must be written regarding the experience.

Tests and Quizzes: A test is generally worth 70-100 pts. except the final exam, which will be comprehensive. Review sheets given 3-5 days prior to a test. Quizzes will be worth 25-50 pts., might be unannounced.

  • Retakes are NOT an options – study
  • If you are absent the day before a test, and knew about the test expect to take it upon return.
  • Final exam – everyone takes one [20% of your grade]
Makeup/Late Work

It is your responsibility to get the assignment, not mine.

  • If you are absent, you must get the assignment and the missing journals. Check folder in back of room.
  • Late work will be entered as a Zero until made up.
  • You will be given two late passes to be used on MOST assignments– no questions
  • Tests can ONLY be made up after school (during homework lab or in my classroom) if absence is verified
  • You do many assignments as groups – be respectful to these individuals; be here or let them know ahead of time

Attendance

  • You are expected to be in class on a regular basis. This is a hands-on, activity and discussion based class. Your attendance is necessary for you to do well.
  • Tardy – The school wide tardy policy will be followed.

Extra Credit - I will announce/don’t ask

  • Don’t forget about recycled materials (20 items – 1 pt per item)
  • Participation above and beyond Service project (Up to 25 pts)

Classroom Policies and Discipline:

Show respect, for fellow students and teacher at all times and Use common sense as it applies to the general rules of our student handbook as well as common moral conduct.

  • No backpacks (they remain outside the door) – get what you need before class
  • No phones (they are not to be on desks or plugged into walls)
  • Be in your seat and prepared to when bell rings
  • Restroom/Locker – NOT at the start of class; when appropriate/one at a time take pass/Sign out
  • Be respectful of teacher and others – disrupting learning environment for others is not acceptable
  • Tardy Policy– sign-in if NOT in room as bell rings
  • Act the way you wish to be treated – as a child or an adult? Your choice
