Hospital Leave Day Rate

NOTE: For full details regarding the hospital leave day policy, Medicaid Provider Manual, Nursing Facility Chapter, “Coverages”. Medicaid will reimburse a nursing facility during a Medicaid resident’s temporary absence from the facility for admission to the hospital for emergency medical treatment. If there is a reasonable expectation by the attending physician at the point of admission that the resident will return from the hospital by the end of the tenth day, the nursing facility should hold the bed. The facility may bill the Medicaid program and receive the following reimbursement per patient day.

Effective January 1, 2005, Medicaid will reimburse a nursing facility to hold a bed for a beneficiary’s temporary absence from the facility due to admission to the hospital for emergency medical treatment only when the facility’s total available bed occupancy is at 98 percent or more on the day the beneficiary leaves the facility.

The hospital leave day rate will be determined annually, to coincide with the State fiscal year of October 1 through September 30 of the fiscal year given.

The “Coverages” section in the Nursing Facility Chapter of the Medicaid Provider Manual provides the detailed policy on hospital leave days.
