AIS Section Description
Guided Studies AIS
In the Guided Studies AIS students have the tools needed to comprehend material they read, as well as the tools needed to successfully write a well written thematic or DBQ essay. Students placed in this AIS may struggle at times with course content, but overall they are not in danger of failing their end of the year Social Studies evaluation (final, Regents exam). However, they may not be working to their fullest potential. While the traditional AIS structure may not be necessary for the Guided Studies AIS student, this student finds success when in a quiet environment with a small amount of students. During a typical Guided Studies AIS the Social Studies AIS teacher will spend as much time as necessary to aid the student in comprehending the content of either their current enrolled Social Studies course and/or aid the student in gaining a score on the on NYS Regents Exam that reflects their true potential. Each day when their Social Studies instruction is completed, students will work on assignments from other enrolled courses and the teacher will provide aid when necessary. A student in this AIS can be mixed with students from a Less Intensive (LI) AIS. Limit 7 students per sections unless there is prior approval by the teacher. Due to class size restrictions, as well as teacher duty limits, there is no guarantee that a student selected for Guided Studies AIS will be able to be placed in a Social Studies AIS classroom. However, if the student is unable to be placed in an AIS, paperwork will still be done for this student and kept with the Department Chair. Students who have met their goals in the Guided Studies AIS are eligible to exit the AIS and enter a study hall and/or other class that fits their schedule.
LI (Less Intensive) AIS
In the Less Intensive (LI) AIS, students struggle at certain aspects in regards to their reading comprehension, content knowledge, and/or writing ability. These weaknesses result in the student struggling in his/her enrolled Social Studies course and/or affect the student’s ability to successfully pass the New York State Regents exams placing these students in danger of receiving below a 65%. In the LI AIS students will be given hands on instruction in regards to any predetermined area of weakness in the hopes up of strengthening these areas. Focus will center on content knowledge, but tips on writing thematic and DBQ essays, as well as reading comprehension tips will be intertwined within this instruction. Depending on the amount of weaknesses that must be addressed, once the Social Studies instruction is complete, students may have time to work on assignments from other courses with the teacher acting as a resource when necessary. However, the majority of the time should be focused on Social Studies related help. Students who have met their goals in the LI AIS and are eligible to exit the AIS are strongly encouraged to continue in a Guided Studies AIS. Limit 7 students per section, unless there is prior approval by the teacher. It would be beneficial to place students designated for a LI AIS with other students enrolled in a similar course (US, Global) instead of blending students who are in need of instruction for US and Global, as this severely limits the effectiveness of the AIS.
MI (More Intensive) AIS
In the More Intensive (MI) AIS, students struggle at many aspects in regards to reading comprehension, content knowledge, and writing ability. These weaknesses result in the student severely struggling in his/her enrolled Social Studies course and place the student in increased danger of failing the New York State Regents exams. In the MI AIS, students will be given hands on instruction in regards to any predetermined areas of weakness in the hopes up strengthening these areas. Focus will center on reading comprehension, as well as writing ability, but content knowledge will many times be the basis of this instruction. Typically students in the MI AIS require the full period to meet their goals. Since these students may severely struggle with content, to prevent overexertion at times it may be necessary to allow alternative forms of instruction or even a break period for these students to recharge. However, because of the high needs of these students this time should be limited. Limit 2-3 students per section unless there is prior approval by the teacher. Unless prior approval is given by the student’s classroom teacher and Department Chair a student who meets their goals in the MI AIS and is eligible to exit will automatically be placed in a LI AIS.
