ABSTRACT
This template is intended to provide an easy method for preparing a manuscript for submission to the IRW. Simply replace the words in this page and the next with your own, and your manuscript will be automatically correctly formatted for publication in the IRW Final Report.
TRADITIONAL FORMAT & STYLE
The IRW has traditionally used the IEEE two column format based on the IEEE instructions, “Preparation of Papers in a Two Column Format for IEEE Photo-Offset Publications” (rev 2-1-93). This style is preferred for the IRW Final Report due to its readability and flexibility. It is preferred that your manuscript be submitted electronically using this exact template set up for 8½" 11" sheets (use one side only) but it is also possible to submit a manuscript with this template set up for A4 sheets (210 mm 297 mm). There are different margins requirements for A4 than for 8½" 11" to keep the column widths and heights equal.
Figures and Photos
For clarity and readability, it is desirable to keep figures or photos clean and simple. Generally, the figures or photos included in the paper are the same as those used during the visual presentation at the workshop. They must be black and white(grayscale) and referenced in the text of the paper. They should have a short caption directly underneath with a concise explanation of the figure or photo. Figures, photos or equations may go across the two columns where needed.
Manuscript for Final Report must be black & white
The paper copy and the electronic file of the manuscript for the IRW Final Report must be black & white with grayscale for all figures. For graphs please use appropriate line types/styles and different symbolsinstead of color.
Margins
Letter (8½” 11"): On 8½" 11", the top & bottom margins should be 0.69" and left & right margins should be 0.67" (4 pica) with .19" between columns. Column widths will then be 3.48".
A4 (210 mm 297 mm): On 210 mm 297 mm (8.27" 11.69"), A4, size paper, the top & bottom margins shall be 2.64 cm (1.04") and left & right margins shall be 1.42 cm (0.56") with .48 cm (.19") between columns. Column widths will then be 8.84 cm (3.48").
Misc.: Do not use gutter margins since your paper may begin on the right or the left. Page numbers and headers, if any, will be added by the publication consultant.
Character and Paragraph Formats
The text font should be proportional space 9 pt Times Roman (or equivalent) at 10.5 pt leading (line spacing) with 0.3" (8 mm) first line indent, justification, and hyphenation. The paper title should be 14pt. Times Roman (or equivalent). Name(s), affiliation(s), and address(es) should appear centered below the title in 11 pt Times Roman (or equivalent).
Avoid using underlining, use bold instead.
Headings
Main Headings: Main headings (such as Abstract and Format & Style of this instruction) should be in all capitals, 11pt, bold and centered with 10 pt before and 10 pt after.
Subheadings: Any sub-headings in upper-lower case will be 11pt aligned left with 10 pt before and after.
Sub-subheading: Any sub-subheadings will be indented, 9pt bold, and run in at the beginning of the paragraph.
REFERENCES
List and number all bibliographical references at the end of the paper using References as a main heading. When referring to a particular reference in the text, type the corresponding reference number in square brackets in the form as shown here [1] in the middle of this sentence.

Units of Measure
Points: Points refer to 72 points per inch so that 12 pt is one sixth of an inch.
Pica: Pica is one sixth of an inch or six pica equals one inch.
Page limit
The page limit for papers accepted for oral presentation is six pages. The average IRW paper is four to five pages long. For refereed posters the papers are limited to four pages, including text and figures. For walk-in posters the page limit is two pages total.
Manuscript submission:It is required that a printed version of the paper and a storage media (e.g. diskette, CD or ZIP disk) containing a WORD-file of the paper are given to the session chair during IRW. The paper copy is needed to verify that the version printed in the IRW Final Report has the original, intended format.
