I have always had a prominent interest in the sciences, combined with a love of interacting with and helping people from all walks of life. This and the ability to apply my theoretical knowledge and curiosity about the functioning of the human eye to a practical discipline, is why Optometry is a profession I am already finding and will continue to find incredibly rewarding.

Aside from my academic interests, I am a keen fell runner, horse rider and enjoy climbing Via Ferrata in the Alps. I recently raised funds for Optometry Giving Sight by completing the 25 mile YorkshireDales Three Peaks fell run. My interpersonal skills and initiative helped my role as the Optometry Class Representative and promoter for the University Optics Society for which I have annually given a piano performance at their ‘Eye Ball’.

I am also a keen to get involved with my local voluntary services; these have included volunteering at the Cambridge University Science Festival, at the Carriage Riding for the Disabled Association in Flocktonand at present, with the Vision Care for Homeless People Clinic in Manchester. They have all proved meaningful and satisfying, as I have witnessed firsthand how the provision of a service such as these can directly improve someone’s quality of life. In doing so, it has been necessary for me to conveyimportant information across to a variety of ages and abilities in an engaging yet professional manner. A skill which I feel would be crucial in my future career as an optometrist.
