Central Catholic Welcomes Author of The Last Town on Earth
On Tuesday, April 24, Central Catholic High School will welcome Thomas Mullen, author of The Last Town on Earth, as the featured speaker in the CCHS Reads program. He will speak at a 2:00 p.m. assembly in the CCHS Sullivan Center. The assembly is free and open to the general public.
Mr. Mullen will also be featured at an Evening with the Author on Monday, April 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Historic Church of St. Patrick rectory, 130 Avondale Ave. in Toledo. This is a private reception with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The cost is $25 per person at the door. Please R.S.V.P. for this event by April 20 to Marlena Kleine at . The Last Town on Earth is Thomas Mullen’s debut novel that takes place in 1918. America is fighting a war on foreign soil that has divided the nation. Meanwhile, rumors of the spread of the deadliest epidemic ever are causing panic on the home front. The uninfected town of Commonwealth, Washington votes to quarantine itself, and two young friends are asked to guard the town entrance and keep strangers out. One day, a starving, cold - and seemingly ill - soldier comes out of the woods begging for sanctuary, and the two guards are confronted with an agonizing moral dilemma.
The students at Central Catholic have been reading the book, and teachers are incorporating it into classroom lessons in many subject areas. The project will culminate with Mr. Mullen’s personal visit to the school to address students, staff, and special guests.
The CCHS Reads program began at Central Catholic during the 2006-07 school year to encourage students to read for fun. In the program, teachers and students read the same book and then study it as it is integrated into classroom lessons. CCHS Reads is designed to promote lifelong reading by encouraging students to read and discuss an author’s work before and after the author visits the school for an all-school assembly.

The Last Town on Earth was named Best Debut Novel of 2006 by USA Today, was a Chicago Tribune Best Book of the Year, a New York Times Editor’s Choice, and was awarded the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for excellence in historical fiction. Thomas Mullen was born and raised in Rhode Island, graduated from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, and currently lives in Atlanta with his wife and two sons.
