ADDENDUM NEWSLETTER -- Notice of Community Outreach Symposium

“Building Bridges That Last: Fostering Productive and Ongoing Relationships Between Researchers and Communities”

September 14 (11:30AM - 6:30PM) and September 15, 2010 (7:30AM - 5 PM)

·  How do researchers build meaningful relationships with their subject populations and with the communities from which those subject populations originate?

·  How should researchers and human subjects protection programs educate communities about research?

·  What are community perceptions of research, and how do they think we as researchers can do better to educate them and include them in the research process?

·  What obligations are owed by research institutions to communities that feed the research enterprise?

Thomas Jefferson University, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Drexel/Saint Christopher’s Hospital for Children, the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University are sponsoring this 11/2 day conference that will explore these and other pertinent questions addressing the challenges of building relationships between researchers and communities. This symposium is designed to generate discussion, present proven methods, and help you come up with new strategies to improve your recruitment and create lasting relationships with research populations.

The symposium will feature keynote speakers from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) and from the Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP) along with several pertinent panel discussions.

Panels will include successful researchers, IRB members & administrators, and community leaders. The panels are:

o  “Ideas and Concerns - IRB Leaders Speak”

o  “Emergency Medicine Research - A Model for Community Consultation and Feedback”

o  “The Community Speaks Up - Community Perspectives on Research, Participation and Dialogue”

o  “Finding and Maintaining Research Communities“

o  Models of Success I: Socio-Behavioral Research”

o  Models of Success II: Biomedical Research”

o  Models of Success III: Education Research”

o  “Which Communities Do I Represent? - IRB Members Speak Their Minds”

Also

·  Lunch will be served on both days

·  Cocktail reception following the afternoon session on Tuesday, September 14

·  Continental breakfast will be served on Wednesday, September 15

·  CME and CU credits will be awarded

·  Learning materials will be available on-line following the symposium

·  You will have the chance to talk to leaders in the field who have had success building community relationships
