NIDOS is a network of over 100 international development organisations in Scotland. We aim to improve the capacity and effectiveness of the sector in Scotland through support for networking and debate, training, peer support and promotion of good practice.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, outgoing person with skills in supporting organisations to strengthen their practice, effectiveness and fundraising. The postholder needs to have experience in working with organisations to develop their strategy, monitoring and evaluation/impact measurement, governance and fundraising, particularly where this has been done in support of smaller organisations and in an international development context. The postholder will provide an outreach and advisory service to NIDOS member organisations seeking to strengthen their effectiveness and fundraising.

Initial Contract period12 months to 31 March 2013 but probably extended for a
further three years pending a funding decision.
Purpose of Job: to support individual NIDOS member organisations, particularly but not exclusively small organisation members, to strengthen their organisations’ effectiveness, transparency and impact through providing support through our Effectiveness programme. They will work both reactively but also proactively through outreach to respond to individual members’ needs. They will input ideas into the development of NIDOS’s Effectiveness programme.
Activities:
- Provide an effectiveness and fundraising enquiries service to NIDOS
members.
- Outreach to NIDOS members to help them identify their strengths and
weaknesses and to review the key areas of development and improvement
that they are trying to achieve and develop action plans with them, including
using Effectiveness tools/resources where appropriate.
3.Provide individual surgeries, building in the use of relevant effectiveness tools
and resources wherever possible, for NIDOS members wanting support with:
- Strengthening their Governance and human resource systems
- Developing their marketing, communications and fundraising capacity
- Strengthening strategic planning and review systems and cycle – business planning; monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment; implementing learning
- Improving their partnership working with Southern Partners
- Strengthening their transparency
4. Running fundraising support surgeries and organising training sessions, to help NIDOS members strengthen their fundraising and showing how greater effectiveness will build fundraising success.
5. Developing promotional material and events, together with the Chief
Executive, to build awareness of the effectiveness support services and tools available and to build engagement among members in the use of the
effectiveness programme
6.Develop and support opportunities for peer review and mentoring between
NIDOS member organisations, to encourage the sharing of experience and
learning.
7. Input to the review and development to Effectiveness tools and resources
8.Develop links with other capacity building agencies in Scotland, such as
Evaluation Support Scotland, the CVS network etc, to help NIDOS Members to
access otherexisting capacity building and mentoring services in Scotland
9.Support the development of the Small NGOs group to build their capacity to
share experience and input to the NIDOS effectiveness programme.
10.Coordinating the NIDOS PQASSO working group to develop NIDOS’s own internal effectiveness review and ensuring progress on implementing learning and improvement in NIDOS.
11. Input to the development of NIDOS strategy and business planning,
particularly in relation to any emerging effectiveness issues or needs
identified by NIDOS members, through their work.
12. Maintain records of activity and contribute to NIDOS monitoring, evaluation
and impact assessment activity related to the review of NIDOS’s objectives
and activities.
13.Attend NIDOS Board meetings, team meetings, AGM and staff training as required.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential skills and experience:
- Strong skills and experience in either of the following (though both would be ideal):
- successfully strengthening the governance, monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment of a small or medium-sized international NGO (INGO) (under £1 million annual turnover)
- or successfully providing support to such organisations to strengthen governance, monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment improvements
- Successful recent experience of fundraising for an INGO in UK, from a mixture of sources such as Government/Statutory, Trusts, individual donors and corporate sources, particularly for a smaller organisation.
- Understanding of impact, effectiveness, transparency and ‘value for money’ debates within international development
- Experience of working/volunteering in an international development project abroad or other direct experience of partnership building and community based working with partner organisations in a developing country
- Ability to work on own initiative, problem solve and to motivate others to act
- Ability to plan work within the context of an agreed Business Plan
- Good communicator, in writing, on the phone and in person, with experience of working positively with members/customers, volunteers/staff and Trustees of INGOs and of making presentations at events
- Experience and confidence in the use of ICT, including use of Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint and websites
- Ability to travel around Scotland, including some out of hours work
- Degree level or equivalent qualification
Desirable skills and experience:
- Experience of being on the Board of Trustees/Committee of a voluntary organisation
- Good knowledge of the international development sector, preferably including this sector in Scotland
- Experience of planning and facilitating events and training
- Knowledge of global international development standards and quality initiatives
- Experience of membership-based organisations such as networks and coalitions, ideally within the charity/NGO sector
