INTERVIEW – CONSOLE OPERATOR

Give the applicant an overview of the position, and the requirements/expectations of the role.

The role of console operator involves:

  • customer service
  • cash handling
  • preparing / cooking food (sites where applicable)
  • making coffees using barista style coffee machine (sites where applicable)
  • stocking shelves, fridges, freezers
  • conducting fuel tank dips, tank water tests and emergency stop tests
  • general site cleaning (including but not limited to: cleaning toilets, dusting, sweeping/mopping floors, washing windows, wiping down benches, cleaning fuel bowsers, picking up litter)
  • unpacking stock orders
  • use of the point of sale computer equipment
  • following general instructions from the Site Manager and Assistant Site Manager
  • site opening and site closing procedures
  • observing and adhering to health and safety procedures and policies
  • undergo training
  • requires team work and multi-tasking for the site to run efficiently

Skills/Qualifications:

Customer focus; ability to multi-task; develop and maintain customer relationships; competent in the use of computers; team player and willing to take instruction from others; excellent communication skills; good local knowledge.

Physical requirements:

  • Be on your feet for most (if not all) of your shift
  • Ability to lift and stack store items in fridges/cool rooms/shelves within health and safety limits
  • Kneeling/bending over to take tank dips on the forecourt whilst following health and safety procedures
  • Clean premises and facilities as required, eg. toilets, basins, floors, windows, bowsers, shelving, kitchen equipment

  1. Do you currently hold a job anywhere else? (We cannot employ anyone currently working at a competitor service station)
  1. What do you know about Vantage Fuels?
  1. Have you worked in a service station or customer service role before? If so, what did you enjoy most about this role?
  1. What experience have you had working with computers in the past?
  1. Have you any experience in food preparation and handling (if applicable to your site)?
  1. Do you hold any qualifications/certificates (eg. food handling, first aid, etc)?
  1. What are your areas of strength that you could apply to the role of console operator?
  1. Are there any areas you feel you can improve as an employee?
  1. What are your long term goals/plans – what would you like to achieve in your employment here?
  1. How would you react in the following situation (select a couple of scenarios):
  2. The customer you are serving has asked for a coffee to take away, and there are 4 customers behind them waiting to be served - what would you do?
  • A customer on the forecourt has the petrol nozzle in their fuel tank with a mobile phone up to their ear, and they are waiting for you to authorise the pump to start pumping petrol – what would you do?
  • You have a customer getting vocal/loud at the front counter complaining about the price of fuel – what would you do?
  • A product does not scan, so you do not have the price information – what would you do?
  1. What is your availability? Are you able to work the various shifts that we require?
  1. Are you available at short notice (ie. sometimes we need to cover shifts due to illness)?
  1. Are there any days/times throughout the week you are unable to work due to outside commitments?
  1. Clarify / confirm they would be happy to work opening shifts, closing shifts, weekend shifts.
  2. We are a business that is open 365 days of the year, and we rely on all staff to be able to work public holidays throughout the year, including Christmas Day and Good Friday. Are you able to meet this requirement?
  1. Is there anything else you would like to share about your skills or experience that have not been covered so far?
  1. Do you have any questions?

Appearance

  • Does the applicant present well? (ie. clean/tidy/appropriate clothing, no excessive visible piercings or offensive tattoos, clean/neat hair)

Communication

  • Is the applicant well spoken and have a personable/approachable manner?

Reference Checks

  • Let the applicant know that you will be running a reference check/s. Request references if they are not listed on their resume.
  • If their most recent employer is not a reference, ask if you can contact that employer.

Explain to the applicant the process from here:

  • Interviews of other applicants will be conducted, and the successful applicant will be contacted within ……… days to be asked to come in and do a 4 hour trial shift. After completing this trial shift, if they are deemed suitable for the role, they will be offered the position.
  • The new employee will complete a Site SafetyWalk with the Site Manager prior to commencing their first shift (can be done as the first task on their first shift).
  • The successful applicant will work 3 training shifts alongside the Site Manager or Assistant Site Manager, before being required to work solo shifts.
