RE: Applied Investment Management Course (FIN 40640)

The Department of Finance offers an undergraduate course in the fall semester entitled, "Applied Investment Management." The following pages provide a brief description of the course and an application form.

The selection of students for the course will be made by a committee of faculty based upon (1) overall academic performance, (2) performance in specific finance courses and other courses relevant to investment management -- e.g., accounting, economics, statistics, (3) an essay that articulates why you want to be in the course and why you should be selected, and (4) experience and career objectives.

If you are interested in applying for the course, you should submit the following to my office (MCOB 307A) or my mailbox (MCOB 338) by Friday, March 21, 2014 at 12:00 p.m.:

·  The application form,

·  A recent transcript (an Inside ND printout is acceptable) which includes both your results through Fall 2013 and your schedule for Spring 2014,

·  A one-page typed essay, and

·  A copy of your resume.

E-mailed applications are not acceptable. Students studying abroad may fax their applications to my attention at (574) 631-5255 or mail them to the following address:

Prof. Frank K. Reilly

University of Notre Dame

307A Mendoza College of Business

In order for your application to be considered, it must be complete and received by the March 21, 2014 deadline, regardless of your current location. We expect to inform students of our decision the week before registration.

APPLIED INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT COURSE

The Applied Investment Management (AIM) course provides an opportunity for students to blend the theory of investments with the practical demands of hands-on investment management. Academic objectives include an understanding of the process of establishing and implementing a portfolio strategy, a knowledge of the mechanics of trading and the current theories of market microstructure, the principles of fundamental equity valuation, technical analysis, and portfolio management concepts such as performance evaluation, active structured and passive (i.e., indexing) strategies. During the semester the students will complete written assignments to ensure mastery of the underlying concepts.

The practical objectives will be achieved by hands-on management of a real portfolio. At the outset the class will establish portfolio management policies and objectives that are consistent with those of the University. They will actively manage this portfolio throughout the semester in accordance with the established goals. Each week they will make presentations on economic fundamentals, on alternative industries, and on individual companies. From these presentations they will make investment recommendations that will be voted on by the entire class. Periodically, guest speakers who are security analysts and/or portfolio managers will be invited to share practical insights on the investment management process. At the end of the course the students will establish a policy to be followed until the next class assumes responsibility for the portfolio. The class will also make a presentation to an Advisory Group of practitioners regarding the activities of the class and the long-term and short-term performance of the portfolio.

In the Fall semester, the class is open to seniors who have completed the Investment Theory course (FIN 30600) and are graduating no later than May 2015. In the Spring semester, the course is open to MBA students who have completed the Investment Management course (FIN 70600) or its equivalent. Also, because of the importance of financial statement analysis, we strongly recommend that undergraduate students complete the third required accounting course, Corporate Financial Reporting (ACCT 30100), prior to the AIM class in the fall. Also, graduate students should enroll in an advanced accounting course such as Corporate Financial Reporting (ACCT 70110, 70120).
