Safety Committee Meeting Minutes

January 9, 2012

ATTENDANCE

In attendance for this meeting were Robin Blacksmith, Cathy Patrick, Mary Sheaffer, Stephanie Tam, Melinda Lane, Rosemary Dunne, Bob Roehl, Daina Smuidrins and Margaret Parker, who took the minutes.

PREVIOUS MEETING MINUTES REVIEW

The meeting minutes for December 5, 2011 were approved as written.

NEW SAFETY & HEALTH ISSUES

Rosemary Dunne had concerns about student awareness of students with disabilities. Students with disabilities are easily bumped into by other students who are so busy walking/skateboarding/surfing while on their i-phones, i-pods, etc and not paying attention. Suggestions were made to use DAAG and the PUB monitors for messages about awareness.

Rosemary also requested that a recycle bin be placed inside the 2910 lobby where students eat.

EVACUATION DRILL OF THE 1000

Robin reported that overall it went smoothly even though only a small group of people were in the building.

Due to the rain, one group huddled outside of the PUB instead of going to the proper evacuation area.

Fire Drill Evaluation Forms were passed out to the committee.

Some items of note learned from the drill:

§  Everyone should look at the evacuation map before the drill

§  Some of the old alarms need updating

§  Helpful to have a list of the people who should be in the building

§  Useful to appoint floor monitors for the buildings

We will have more drills in the future.

ACCIDENT & CRIME REPORT

Robin Blacksmith Security Director circulated the Shoreline Community College Clery Act Public Crime Log for the month of December. Since school was not in session for most of the month, it was a brief report.

She informed us about the two Level III Sex Offenders attending classes this quarter and information about them will be on the Safety & Security website. Professors are informed if registered sex offenders are in their classes. The offenders are required to check in with security and file a safety plan.

SAFETY & HEALTH ISSUES UPDATES

New signage:

The signage looks very nice and was helpful the first day of the quarter.

FEMA Training:

An excellent trainer from Tacoma Police Department ran the training; there was especially useful information about what to do after an earthquake. Bob Roehl and others were certified online and more training will be available.

Wall padding was added to the door frame, doors, and walls in the gym during the break.

Next Meeting: Monday, February 6, 2:00 – 3:00pm, Room 1020M, Central Conference Room.
