Mrs. SkinnerCanton High School – Algebra 1Syllabus
Welcome to Algebra 1! Our goal in this class will be to develop higher level thinking skills, effective communication skills, and greater depth of knowledge.
This year we will cover the following units:
- Relationships between quantities
- Linear Relationships
- Exponential and Quadratic Relationships
- Advanced Functions and Equations
- Data Analysis
Supplies you will need for the beginning of the year:
3 ring binder / 5 dividers / 4 pkhighlitersasst colors (optional) / Fine tip colored markers (optional) / Package of PencilsPlain notebook paper / Grading utensil (any color) / Composition notebook / Each class will be requested to bring sanitizer, tissue, batteries, etc.
It is important to be prepared and ready to learn each day. Please come to class with all your supplies!
Notebook/Composition Book:
The notebook/composition book will contain most of the work that we complete in Algebra 1. I may collect all notebooks periodically to grade all assignments or I will grade work on the date due during class. The composition book will have a table of contents that should be kept up to date with the assignment name, date, and section. I will also check notebooks at random to see that students are keeping up on their assignments and table of contents properly.
We will also have daily problems/bell ringers that we will write in our notebooks as well as reflections and essential questions.
In addition, a notebook/composition notebook test will be given at the end of each nine weeks. If you organize your course materials and keep your notebook, it should be a high test grade. This is considered built in extra credit.
Make-up Work:
If you are absent for personal reasons or extracurricular activities you are responsible for tuning in any work that was due on the day you missed the first day that you return. You are responsible for getting any work that you missed as well as notes taken in class. If you are absent and a test/quiz was given, you must make an appointment for that to be taken and the date must be approved by the teacher.
Retakes:
All students who fail a homework/quiz should take advantage of retakes! You will be able to retake any homework/quiz for a maximum grade of a 70. However, the retake must be done in advisory on a scheduled day. Failure to show up on the scheduled day will result in the forfeit of the retake.
Entering and Exiting the Classroom:
When the bell rings students must be seated quietly at their desks with calculators and composition books for attendance. Tardies result in a 30 minute detention. When the class is over, students will be dismissed by me, not the bell. Please remain seated until you have been excused.
Students should use the restroom during passing period and may only leave the classroom with their hall pass card and teacher permission.
Homework:
Homework is a necessary practice for mastering the material covered. Homework is due at the beginning of the period. Homework must be done neatly with the problem copied, work shown, and answers boxed in. If there is a specific format the teacher will convey that to the students. No work shown = NO CREDIT (NWSNC)
Calculators:
You will be assigned a calculator to use during class. Make sure to always use the same number! If your number is not available, please let me know right away so that we can find out who had it last. If you are caught using someone else’s calculator, it will result in a one-hour detention. DO NOT TAKE THE CALCULATOR OUT OF THE CLASSROOM! If you need to use a calculator, you may check one out at the library.
Classroom Rules:
- Be on time, seated, and prepared before the tardy bell. Use the restroom during passing period.
- Follow cell phone/personal device policy.
- No racial, ethnic, or sexual harassment. Respect others and their property.
- Follow all handbook rules.
Cell Phone/Personal Device Policy:
Cell phones are NOT to be out during class except when participating in educational activities. If a student is caught with their phone/device out the consequences are as follows:
- 1st Offense: the confiscated device will be turned into the office and the student will receive a one-hour detention and the device may not be picked up until the end of the school day.
- Additional Offenses: The confiscated device will be turned into the office and the student will receive a one-hour detention and must be picked up by a parent from the assistant principal’s office for a fee of $15.
- NOTE: students bring electronic devices to school at their own risk. The District will not be held responsible if a phone or other item is lost, stolen, or misplaced, including those that have been confiscated.
