Monday, January 11—Phonological Awareness--Blending Syllables. Parents, you say a word broken into syllables such as /ta/… /ble/. Have your child clap their hands as they blend the word together and say, “table.” Keep playing with other two syllable words (window, brother, paper, and curtain). Now try longer words (piano and Kindergarten). Extension: Sound spell long words by breaking them up into syllables (e.g., break dinosaur into /din/…/o/…/saur/). Sound spell (their own spelling according to the sounds they hear—not correct spelling)other long words such as Disneyland, strawberries, and salamander. Practice with sight word flashcards sent home last week.

Tuesday, January 12—Mathematics—Counting & Cardinality--Counting On. Parents, you say a number such as 8. Have your child count on 9, 10, 11 until they reach 20. You say another number such as 24. Have your child count on until they reach 30. Continue playing with any number 1-100. Play until it is no longer fun. Have your child practice writing their numbers to 20. Extension: Parents, say two numbers such as 2 and 3. Have your child start at 2 and then add on 3 (2,3,4,5) Have your child count to 100 to you or as far as they can go. Practice with flashcards.

Wednesday, January 13—Phonological Awareness--Isolating Ending Sounds. Parents you say a one syllable word (mop.) Have your child say the sound you hear at the end of the word (/p/). Keep playing using different words. Extension: Play the same game using the digraphs ch, th, and sh. For example, an adult says, “math.” Your child says, “/th/.” Practice with flashcards.

Thursday, January 14—Writing--Text Types and Purpose Opinion Writing--Favorite Toys. Have your childpick five of the new toys they got for Christmas. Have them draw pictures of the toys and use sound spelling (their own spelling according to the sounds they hear—not correct spelling) to label their pictures. Extension: Pick another 5 objects and do the same activity. Practice with flashcards.

Friday, January 15—Send back homework--Bring something to “Show and Tell” that begins with the letter “F or O.”
