Exercise # 1 – LIS/MIC

Goal: The purpose of this exercise is to make sure the user can receive MIC specimens and make edits to existing specimens. You should also be able to print reports.

Routines:

o E/E Requisition

o Receive by Patient

o Print Individual Label

o Edit MIC Source/Specimen Description

o Edit MIC Specimens

o Enter Results

o Inquiry (Internal and External)

Step 1 (Phone Call):

The floor calls asking if you have a minute to place a few MIC orders on a patient with a collection date of today and a collection time of now. You agree and place the order for a Urine Culture and Sputum Culture. The floor agrees to collect the specimens and deliver them to the Lab, correctly labeled with the date, time, and person who collected the specimens. Enter the requisition for a patient but do not receive the specimens. Also make sure that you document the urine was collected with a source of urine and a specimen description of clean catch.

Step 2:

The specimens arrive in the lab, receive the orders and print the specimen labels to go on the collection containers. Note: If a label printer is not available, print to a laser jet to simulate the process.

Step 3:

While receiving the specimens, you happen to notice that the specimen's description as noted by the nurse is catheterized and not clean catch. Correct this issue.

Step 4:

After another examination of the remaining specimens, you notice that a different nurse collected the Sputum Culture. The collection time was actually ten minutes before they called you and asked that you place the orders. Correct both of these things.

Step 5:

The Lab Director returns from yet another coffee break. She wants you to print an internal inquiry for all of these specimens. This will prove that you have placed each of the orders correctly. Check to be sure you have the correct collection information and for the urine, the corrected source or specimen description.

Step 6:

Now you need to get the results to the Nurse. Go to result entry and result the procedures.

Step 7:

Print an external inquiry to show what the doctor will see when viewing the reports.
